The Falcon and the Winter Soldier follows WandaVision as Marvel brings its property to the small screen in long-form series. Captain America’s two closest friends will team up to battle the same enemies Cap fought for years in the comics.
In the comics, Bucky Barnes was Captain America’s best friend since they served in World War II, debuting in the ’40s before Marvel Comics even existed. Years later, Bucky returned as the brainwashed assassin known as the Winter Soldier. Captain America was able to save his friend, and the two remain allies to this day, with The Winter Soldier appearing in many great stories since his return in Marvel Comics. 9 The Longest Winter
The 2012 Winter Soldier series by Ed Brubaker and Jackson Butch Guice featured “The Longest Winter,” playing out in the first five issues of Captain America & Winter Soldier.
The storyline has ex-Russian sleeper agents waking up, and it is up to Bucky Barnes and the Black Widow to stop them. The one problem is that Winter Soldier trained these assassins, and when the trail leads to Latveria and Doctor Doom, things get even more dangerous.
8 Winter Soldier (2018)
In 2018, Kyle Higgins and Rod Reis created the Winter Soldier miniseries and took the character in some fresh new directions. Over his life, Bucky Barnes had a lot to atone for, including numerous murders when he was under Hydra’s control.
He has now found redemption, and in this series, he sets out to help others find redemption. Bucky becomes a fixer here, helping those who want out of their lives of crime escape to start anew, but not everyone deserves to be saved.
7 The Bitter March
To see a completely different look at Bucky Barnes, check out Winter Soldier: The Bitter March, a five-issue 2014 miniseries by Rick Remender and Roland Boschi. This takes place long before Bucky ever became a hero again, as it started in 1966 when he was the newly revived Winter Soldier, working for the Soviet Union.
Bucky is Winter Soldier at his deadliest here. His job is to acquire some scientists, dead or alive. However, he also has to face Hydra at the same time. This is a pure ’60s Cold War callback.
6 The Burden Of Dreams
Captain America is dead. With the world in shock, Iron Man shows up and tells Bucky that Cap wanted him to have the uniform and shield and take his place as the new world’s Captain America.
Bucky agrees, but with autonomy because he is not willing to fight anyone else’s battles. In Captain America #34 by Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting, Bucky Barnes set out on one of his most essential missions — replacing an icon and an American hero.
5 The Man On The Wall
The 2015 series Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier by Ales Kopt and Marco Rudy opens with a five-issue storyline titled “The Man on the Wall.”
This is one of the most far-reaching Bucky stories as it takes him out of his comfort zone as a man with a gun and puts him up against cosmic beings and gods. Bucky had taken over the role of the Man on the Wall from Nick Fury, a superspy who fights for everyone while protecting the Earth from extradimensional threats.
4 Road To Reborn
“Road to Reborn” is a series where everyone was still coming to terms with Captain America’s death. Sharon Carter has finally been released from her hypnosis and programming, and Falcon is trying to help her get back on her feet. Bucky has been working as Captain America for a while, with many in society not accepting him.
In Captain America #600, things began to change when Sharon learns the gun she used to kill Captain America with was not a regular gun. These were the issues that eventually led to Steve Rogers’ rebirth.
3 Trial Of Captain America
Bucky Barnes did many bad things in his life before he took on the title of Captain America, and he realized that his past life was coming back to haunt him when evidence of his career as an assassin came to light.
In Captain America #611-615, “The Trial of Captain America” played out. Bucky decided it was time to stand trial for his crimes and finally put his past behind him. This led to Bucky proving what a hero is really about.
2 Captain America (2004)
The comic book storyline that began it all was “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” The storyline played out in Captain America #8-14.
In these issues, a new assassin shows up with direct orders to assassinate several people. Captain America shows up to stop him but then realizes that, to his horror, the Winter Soldier is Bucky Barnes, back from the dead. Captain America then takes it upon himself to save his old friend rather than to beat him.

In 2006, Bucky Barnes tried to get his bearings and become a hero after years of being used as an invisible assassin. The 2006 book Winter Soldier: Winter Kills by Ed Brubaker and Lee Weeks was a one-issue series that showed how hard Bucky had it in the new world.
During the Civil War crossover, Bucky deals with his first Christmas and tries to make up for the past when he teams with the Young Avengers to battle Hydra and save the world.
