The Falcon Sam Wilsons Powers And Abilities Explained

Sam Wilson/the Falcon has been at the center of the MCU since Marvel introduced him as a friend to Steve Rogers, and he’s honed his own range of abilities, though not so much powers, using a range of signature equipment. Sam (Anthony Mackie) gets a chance to tell his own story through the show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the second Disney+ MCU television series, after WandaVision. The show focuses on Sam and fellow friend of the Cap Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) as they deal with the loss of Rogers, their ongoing trauma, and life in the MCU during the post-Blip era.

Sam Wilson was introduced in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, during which he met Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) in Washington, D.C., and played a major role in helping Rogers, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) to take down S.H.I.E.L.D., which had been infiltrated by Hydra. He also sided with Steve Rogers in the superhero civil war, and went on to fight against Thanos in the Battle of Wakanda and the Battle of Earth after becoming a core team member of the Avengers. But Sam already had much experience as an active combatant, having served in the Air Force as a pararescue airman for two tours in Afghanistan, and as a test pilot for the EXO-7 Falcon prototype winged harness/jetpack hybrid. After retiring from active duty, he became a Veterans’ Affairs counselor, helping returned soldiers to process their PTSD.

In Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam and Bucky will face off against a variety of villains, including Captain America: Civil War antagonist Helmut Zemo and Karli Morgenthau, leader of the Flag-Smashers, an anarchist group. While Bucky will confront his own PTSD from his actions as Winter Soldier, Sam will chart a path facing the legacy of Steve Rogers as Captain America, and what that means should he take up the Vibranium shield as Steve invited him to at the end of Avengers: Endgame. So what are Falcon/Sam Wilson’s powers and abilities in the MCU?

Air Force Training

The Falcon Sam Wilsons Powers And Abilities Explained

Sam Wilson had already served in the Air Force for years by the time of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, including two tours of Afghanistan as a pararescue airman and as a prototype test pilot, before he met Steve Rogers. During that time is when he started to use the EXO-7 Falcon wings which would become his signature equipment throughout his time in the MCU. Sam’s Air Force training would have provided him with a high standard of combat-ready ability – not to mention comfort in fighting mid-air – that would allow his skills to be amplified by his equipment later on. Sam retired from active service in the Air Force after losing his wingman, Riley, on a mission using the EXO-7 Falcon prototype. He became a counselor for Veterans’ Affairs in Washington, D.C., where he met Steve Rogers running around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool – truly kicking off his superhero journey and fast-tracking his entry into the Avengers.

The EXO-7 Falcon Suit

The Falcon Sam Wilsons Powers And Abilities Explained

Sam Wilson/Falcon has no innate superpowers granted by a Super-Soldier Serum, exposure to an Infinity Stone, or by existing as a cosmic being, like his fellow Avengers. But he does have the EXO-7 Falcon Suit, an experimental jetpack-flight-suit hybrid that has a number of functions, the primary one being it allows Sam to fly. Paired with Sam’s paratrooper training, agility, and reaction speed, the Falcon suit – or “bird costume” as the Joint Counter Terrorist Centre describes it in Civil War – makes for the equivalent of superpowers for Sam Wilson. The Falcon suit has had three iterations: the original Air Force wings; an Avengers version obtained when he joined the lineup; and an upgraded version as featured in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

The EXO-7 Falcon suit consists of multiple pieces of technology – the jetpack wings themselves, flight goggles, wrist guards, and a back-mounted drone named Redwing. The wings aid with flight but can also be used as a defensive shield or for striking opponents. The flight goggles accompanying the suit include a heads-up display and vision across multiple light spectra, as well as the ability to track targets and sync with Redwing. The wrist guards feature a remote video function – for streaming footage from Redwing – and also have a number of other built-in features, such as a machine gun and mini rocket launcher.

Redwing, The EXO-7 Falcon Suit Drone

The Falcon Sam Wilsons Powers And Abilities Explained

The EXO-7 Falcon suit’s drone, Redwing, has powers and abilities of its own. The reconnaissance drone first appeared alongside Sam Wilson in Ant-Man and was one of Tony Stark’s additions to the Avengers iteration of the suit. Sam has had several different versions of the drone since that first one, though the latest version was destroyed by Karli Morgenthau during a confrontation with the Flag-Smashers. The drone aided Wilson and Romanoff in their confrontation with Crossbones and his mercenaries in Lagos, Nigeria, where it used functions such as a scanner and machine guns. Redwing is also fitted with rockets, a laser, a grappling line, artificial intelligence, and even the ability to split into three smaller drones. Whether all features of Redwing’s previous iterations will be retained should the destroyed drone be replaced remains to be seen.

Experience With Captain America And The Avengers

On top of his training and equipment, Sam Wilson has extensive experience tackling enemies including “the big three” as he puts it – “aliens, androids, and wizards” – as well as Super Soldiers (including Bucky Barnes as Winter Soldier) and all manner of other threats, including Ant-Man. He held his own against other superpowered Avengers such as Spider-Man and War Machine in the superhero civil war, and also fought against Thanos and his Black Order and alien invaders. This experience has gone a long way to helping Sam contribute to the Avengers and other groupings of superheroes – even though he has no innate superpowers himself. The combination of his training, his flight suit, Redwing, and this experience is what makes him worthy and able to confront threats – more of which will be explored throughout the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
