The Fast and the Furious Franchise Has Way Better Titles in Japan

The titles of the films in the Fast and Furious franchise aren’t cohesive and for the most part, confusing compared to their Japanese counterparts that are not only better, they’re also cooler. Kicking off in 2001 as a street-racing centric blockbuster, The Fast Saga has outgrown its original roots to become a full-blown action-adventure series. Currently, it has eight films under the main saga, plus one spin-off offering in Hobbs & Shaw. Three more films from the primary arc are already confirmed including the upcoming F9 directed by Justin Lin.

Dominic Torreto leads a group of skilled players who have over the years developed a genuine bond with each other. Typically called “la familia,” they have gone through several ups and downs throughout their time together making their relationship so much stronger. Initially, the team was involved in illegal activities, but as The Fast Saga went on, they’ve become more focused on doing dangerous but for good missions especially when they started teaming up with DSS agent and bounty hunter Luke Hobbs. To increase the stakes in each film, there’s typically a personal angle to Dom and his team’s task at hand. While the film series has made a name for itself through its insane action set pieces, it’s the characters that remain its biggest audience draw.

The Fast Saga has thrived with its continuous storytelling, but it hasn’t always been planned that way. This is evidence in the movies’ titles which are not bland but can also be very confusing. The titles barely reflect anything from the movies themselves; instead, they resort to using a mix of words from the original’s The Fast and the Furious name and just add a distinguishable element like a number or in the case of The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, a subtitle. However, the Japanese found a way to rectify this issue, giving the franchise a better titling system; the names for the nine entries thus far including Hobbs & Shaw are as follows:

Wild Speed (The Fast and the Furious)Wild Speed X2 (2 Fast 2 Furious)Wild Speed X3 Tokyo Drift (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift)Wild Speed Max (Fast & Furious)Wild Speed Mega Max (Fast Five)Wild Speed Euro Mission (Fast & Furious 6)Wild Speed Sky Mission (Furious 7)Wild Speed: Ice Break(Fate of the Furious)

Wild Speed: Super Combo (Hobbs and Shaw)

Interestingly, these titles seem like they’re for a video game franchise, but oddly they sound appropriate with regard to what The Fast Saga has become known for since its inception. Aside from giving the movies cooler titles, they make it so much easier to distinguish one film from another. The descriptive names help viewers to remember what exactly happened in each installment. Because the U.S. titles for the blockbusters are pretty much similar to each other, it’s easy to be confused with the progression of events throughout the franchise. For example, Sky Mission is citing the sky diving action set piece from Furious 7, while Ice Break is obviously referring to the submarine under the ice in Fate of the Furious. It doesn’t help that it has non-linear storytelling with the events of Tokyo Drift leading directly to Furious 7 despite being years apart of theatrical release.

As the Fast and Furious series enters its final trilogy, it curious seems if there’s any intention to address the confusing system even in its final movies. Fast and Furious 9 is more popularly known as F9, the first time this format is used in the franchise. With some of the marketing materials referring to past installments with a similar format, maybe they can adopt it moving forward just to differentiate the remaining installments from the franchise.
