The Fitbit Luxe Looks Stunning But Its Missing One Key Feature

Fitbit has announced its second hardware release of the year, with the company now unveiling its luxury-focused Fitbit Luxe fitness tracker. The announcement of Fitbit Luxe comes a little over a month after the Fitbit Ace 3 made its debut, now giving Fitbit two new products just a little over four months into 2021.

Not only is Luxe the second Fitbit release of 2021, but it also marks the second product from the company since it officially joined the Google family. There’s a lot of anticipation about what will eventually come out of the Google and Fitbit partnership, with many believing that the two companies are working on a new Wear OS smartwatch with built-in Fitbit health tracking. Renders of the rumored Google Pixel Watch were revealed earlier this month, with that possibly offering a first glimpse as to what that smartwatch will look like.

Regardless of what the future holds for Google and Fitbit, the news today is that the Fitbit Luxe has arrived as Fitbit’s “fashion-forward” tracker that’s designed to “help you take a more holistic approach to your health and wellness.” Compared to other trackers Fitbit has released, there are two main advantages to the Luxe — its design and display. The body of the Luxe is made out of stainless steel, with Fitbit saying it has a “soft, gentle shape inspired by the human body.” The display features a color AMOLED panel with an upgraded interface to make it more in line with Fitbit’s smartwatches. All of the expected health features like 24/7 activity tracking, sleep tracking, a heart-rate monitor, and a SpO2 sensor are all here. The Fitbit Luxe is also launching as the first tracker to offer the stress management tools introduced by the Fitbit Sense, with Fitbit saying the feature is also rolling out to the Charge 4, Inspire 2, Versa 2, and Versa 3 later this year.

How Fitbit Luxe Compares To Other Fitbit Trackers

All of that makes the Fitbit Luxe sound like a really compelling fitness tracker, and in a bubble, it is. However, it falls a bit behind the other trackers Fitbit already offers — specifically, the Fitbit Charge 4. While the Fitbit Charge 4 has a grayscale display and a less attractive design, it has all of the same health features as the Luxe for just $129. Even better is the fact that the Charge 4 comes with built-in GPS for standalone tracking, whereas the Luxe needs to be connected to a smartphone for its GPS functionality. That’s a pretty big feature to be missing, especially considering that the Luxe is more expensive at $149.

There’s also the comparison between the Fitbit Luxe and Fitbit Inspire 2. The Inspire 2 lacks SpO2 tracking and also has a simpler grayscale display, but at just $99, it’s also considerably more affordable. That puts the Fitbit Luxe in an odd position. The new design and AMOLED display both look great, but for anyone serious about running or biking, the Fitbit Charge 4 with its built-in GPS just makes more sense. As for shoppers that want a slim and lightweight tracker with all of the basic health tracking features, the lower price of the Inspire 2 is pretty hard to ignore.

For those that place a lot of value in the aesthetics of their smart wearables, the good news is that the Fitbit Luxe is available for pre-order right now at Fitbit’s website and through “major retailers.” The standard Luxe costs $149.95 and comes with a silicone band, or shoppers can opt for the $199.95 Fitbit Luxe Special Edition that comes with a ‘gorjana Soft Gold Stainless Steel Parker Link Bracelet.’ Both models also come with six months of Fitbit Premium, which on its own is a value of $59.94.
