The Flash All Three Of Wally Wests New Superpowers Explained

Wally West didn’t just return to The Flash in season 6, episode 14, “Death of the Speed Force”, he came back with new superpowers and teased The Flash’s future speedsters. Wally, aka Kid-Flash, has been mostly missing from the Arrowverse since The Flash season 4, after spending some time with the team on Legends of Tomorrow. And finally returned on Earth-Prime after the multiverse collapsed after Crisis on Infinite Earths.

A lot has changed in the Arrowverse since the Anti-Monitor was defeated and the multiverse was restored – at least to some extent. Some characters have returned and some are different than they were before. The latter part includes Wally West, who returned with newfound superpowers that even made Barry Allen jealous.

While most of The Flash season 6, episode 14 was spent on explaining what happened to the Speed Force as well as Eobard Thawne returning in the form of Nash Wells, Wally’s new powers were also a real point of interest. However, it’s unclear if this is due to Crisis on Infinite Earths or his time off meditating and finding himself. Though none of Wally’s superpowers are new to speedsters as a whole, they’re all new to Wally. A few of them even include new wrinkles to powers we haven’t seen in a while.

Control Over Lightning

Lightning has been integral to speedsters for the entire run of The Flash. Barry got his powers from a lightning strike, speedsters crackle with lightning when they run, and season 2 even introduced throwing lightning as an attack that speedsters can use. It’s the easy go-to attack for Barry, often used when he can’t just outrun an opponent and needs a more offensive approach to dealing with the villain of the week.

What Wally shows off is quite a bit different than what viewers have seen before. Rather than just throwing a lightning bolt, he’s able to control the lightning in very fine detail. While sitting in STAR labs in a meditation pose, he crafts the lightning into the shape of a lotus. Even Barry is impressed and unable to do that, telling Wally that he needs to teach Barry his trick. While Wally doesn’t teach it to Barry before the end of the episode, it seems like the perfect power to bring back up sometime in the future. It’s unclear what utility shaping lightning into specific shapes would have, but having such fine control over lightning could come in handy for Barry in the future.

Time Remnants

The Flash All Three Of Wally Wests New Superpowers Explained

Time remnants were officially introduced to the Arrowverse in The Flash season 2. Eobard Thawne used them as a way to prevent being erased from existence after Eddie Thawne shot himself. This is associated mostly with villains on The Flash, being used by Zoom in season 2 and deliberately to create an army of Reverse Flashes when Eobard Thawne was part of the Legion of Doom on Legends of Tomorrow.

While no one calls them time remnants, this is what Wally does at the beginning of “Death of the Speed Force”. Wally manages to save the people from a helicopter crash on his own, but then creates several copies of himself. They pull the helicopter apart piece by piece, preventing it from crashing straight into a building, setting the pieces down in a field next to the people he saved from the crash.

This isn’t the first time heroes have used time remnants. Barry created one of himself to defeat Zoom in season 2, who died in the process. In another timeline, Barry created an army of time remnants to fight Savitar years after Iris’ death at Savitar’s hands. One of those time remnants survived the fight but was shunned by the rest of Team Flash, going on to become Savitar himself. Unlike those other instances, these time remnants seem to have been reabsorbed into Wally without any unnecessary deaths.

Deep Connection To The Speed Force

All speedsters get their powers from the Speed Force, but it acts as a lot more than just a power source. The Speed Force is closer to a type of spiritual energy, which Barry Allen, in particular, has had a profound connection with. Its existence transcends the multiverse, as Barry was able to access it with the Spectre’s help during Crisis on Infinite Earths and even meet the DCEU Flash in the process. In this episode, Wally seems to have gained an even deeper connection with the Speed Force than Barry has had in the past. Likely because of his stronger connection to spirituality in general, Wally is able to go back and forth between Earth-Prime and the Speed Force with ease. He manages to pull Barry into the Speed Force without Barry realizing that it happened. Barry was only able to communicate with the Speed Force when it came to him, while Wally is able to leave his body and project into the Speed Force at will.

This stronger connection sets the entire episode into motion. Wally realizes that something is wrong with the Speed Force, while Barry only notices his powers hiccuping a few times. Barry discovers that he caused the death of the Speed Force by using the Spectre’s powers, as the Speed Force couldn’t handle another type of energy like that. This drives a rift between Wally and Barry until Wally comes to the realization that Barry made the only choice he could have: the entire multiverse was at stake, so he had to do something. With Barry’s decision at the end of the episode that they need to create a new Speed Force, it’s possible that he could develop just as deep of a connection with it as Wally did with the original Speed Force. By playing a part in creating it, Barry is likely to have a much deeper and stronger connection with the new Speed Force. Given that Thawne is the only other person we know of who’s created something like the Speed Force, it does have the possibility to backfire spectacularly.
