The Flash Breaks An Arrowverse Villain Tradition

The Flash takes a refreshing turn for their latest Arrowverse villain as Mirror Master’s arc comes to an end. Throughout The Flash’s run, Barry Allen has gone up against several villains every season from the DC Universe; from evil speedsters, doppelgangers, masterminds, and serial killers, Team Flash has had its hands full for over 7 years. But The Flash season 6 is where the series began refocusing their villains with Bloodwork and Mirror Master that each had their own graphic novel arc. Compared to earlier seasons, these two villains weren’t obsessed with destroying the Multiverse or stealing Barry’s speed.

Instead, they became more complex with Ramsey Rosso wanting to defeat Death itself while Eva McCulloch wanted to liberate herself for being stuck in the Mirrorverse. While The Flash wrapped up Bloodwork’s story by locked up at ARGUS, Mirror Master had a much more complicated Arrowverse journey ahead of her. Despite being part of the last season, the global pandemic delayed the conclusion of her storyline till this year as part of The Flash season 7. Eva made the shocking discovery that her husband Carver, as evil as he was, didn’t lie to her when he kept telling Eva that his wife was dead.

The new Mirror Master discovered that the real Eva died 7 years ago while she’s been a Mirror-clone this entire time. Once her secret was outed to Central City, Eva was determined to turn everyone into mirror duplicates. While it could have been easily another supervillain that went mad and had to be defeated in the traditional way, The Flash took a different route for their latest Arrowverse baddie; Barry and Iris West together tries to get through to Eva that despite wanting a peaceful world, she is contradicting herself by endangering Central City. That’s what ultimately allows her to go against her own plans, thereby breaking a long-standing tradition in the series.

Eva has a moment of self-realization of what she has unleashed by creating mirror clones of Central City citizens. Despite the setup that Eva was possibly unstable once she learned that she wasn’t the real Eva McCulloch, The Flash did something with this villain that their past Arrowverse foes haven’t exhibited. Eva was able to make a choice to either become another super-villain or undo what she has set off before it was too late. If it wasn’t for the encouragement from Iris and Barry, Eva could have become another traditional villain. Together with their help, Eva stops the mirror invasion and makes a decision to return to the Mirrorverse to start over, this time on a good path.

This doesn’t close the door on the Arrowverse to bring Eva back sometime in future seasons of The Flash. It’s unlikely she’ll come back, but the conclusion was still an incredible breathe of fresh air in how the show wrapped up a main villain’s arc. It made Eva’s storyline stand out from other foes Barry has faced before and this time it wasn’t just Flash who saved someone, but it was Iris too. This will hopefully lead to future Arrowverse villains on The Flash to be compelling and more dimensional with Mirror Master setting a great example.
