The Flash Who Was Cobalt Blue Barry Allens Evil Twin

To many comic book readers and TV show viewers, Barry Allen is the Fastest Man Alive and synonymous with the Flash title. His chief antagonist is Eobard Thawne, the classic Reverse-Flash who has an eternal hatred for him. Despite their timeless enmity toward each other, the Allen and Thawne clans are actually far more closely related than they initially realize.

This link between the two is made by Malcolm Thawne. The long-lost brother of Barry Allen, Malcolm Thawne’s hatred of his own sibling would inspire a rivalry reaching into the far-flung future of the DC Universe. Here’s how Malcolm became Cobalt Blue and vexed two different Flashes.

Who Is Malcolm Thawne?

Malcolm Thawne was created by Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn, debuting in Speed Force #1. Though Wally West was the current Flash at that point in DC continuity, the origin story of Malcolm Thawne reached back all the way to the birth of Barry Allen. The night Barry’s mother Nora went into labor, Charlene Thawne did, as well. The doctor was particularly drunk and was unable to save Charlene’s child, who had been strangled by the umbilical cord. Wanting to somehow make it up to the woman, he took advantage of a blackout that struck the hospital. He told Nora the first of her twin boys was stillborn, while secretly giving the child over to Charlene, who believed he was her own.

Growing up with the Thawnes allowed Malcolm to discover their greatest secret. The family had the genetic gift to steal the pain of others, using the ability to become con artists. Unfortunately, due to not actually being a Thawne, Malcolm was initially unable to replicate this “blue flame” technique. He soon discovered his true origins, even killing the doctor who had made the switch in the hospital years ago.

He began stalking his biological brother Barry Allen, growing resentful over the much better life that he had experienced with Henry and Nora. He soon mastered the blue flame power, channeling his hatred of Barry into a talisman that he wore around his neck. This allowed him to surround himself with these flames without causing himself harm. He could also manifest objects out of this mysterious energy, including weapons such as swords. Taking the name Cobalt Blue, he attacked the Flash and Kid Flash, using the blue flame to steal their speed. Their battle came to an end when Cobalt Blue was seemingly destroyed by his own flame and absorbed into his talisman.

Who Is Cobalt Blue?

Malcolm Thawne would reappear years later, ironically after his brother Barry had died during the Crisis on Infinite Earths. He still sought revenge against Barry, as well as the Flash legacy in general, and felt robbed of achieving his ultimate victory. This saw him destroying the iconic Flash Museum and even stealing the speed of Jay Garrick, the original Golden Age Flash.

He would use this power to travel through time and strike at all of Barry’s descendants, igniting the fiery rivalry between the Thawnes and the Allens that would inspire Eobard himself. Malcolm eventually found his way to the 30th century, encountering Barry Allen living with Iris. Other Flashes from throughout history were also present, serving Cobalt Blue due to possessing a fraction of his mystical talisman. Wally finally ended his evil once and for all by running toward the very edge of the Speed Force. Gathering up this much energy overloaded Thawne’s talisman, seemingly destroying him for good. Since then, Malcolm/Cobalt Blue has yet to reappear, with even the New 52 and DC Rebirth failing to bring him back. DC Future State, however, did briefly feature him, and with Infinite Frontier restoring the Flash legacy, Cobalt Blue’s blue flame could soon burn again.
