The Flash Why Shantel VanSantens Patty Spivot Left In Season 2

Last Updated: October 21, 2020

Patty Spivot, played by Shantel VanSanten, left The Flash in the middle of season 2 and never returned to the Arrowverse. Patty was a cop who worked for the Central City Police Department and a love interest for Barry Allen (Grant Gustin). Their relationship turned sour, however, leading to Patty leaving Central City for good.

In the comic books, Patty Spivot was Barry’s lab assistant and a supporting character in the pages of The Flash, beginning in the 1970s. In the original continuity, she was secretly in love with Barry. The character was adapted to the Arrowverse in The Flash season 2 as a character romantically interested in Barry. At this time, Barry was trying to move on from Iris (Candice Patton). While dating Patty, Barry kept his activities as the Scarlet Speedster a secret from her. Barry also helped Patty overcome her need for revenge against Weather Wizard (Liam McIntyre), the man who murdered her father and the real reason she came to Central City in the first place.

What ever happened to Patty Spivot? She left the series just one episode after the midseason premiere. The Flash had to write her off after VanSanten was cast in a series regular role on USA’s Shooter [via Bustle]. After deciding to leave Central City for Midway City, she broke up with Barry, just before figuring out Barry’s secret. She told Barry that she’d stay and resume their relationship if he came clean, but due to his fear that Zoom would use her against him, he kept up the lie. Patty tricked Barry into revealing himself and departed Central City for good, since he was unable to be honest with her. That was the end of Patty’s Arrowverse story.

UPDATE: In October 2020, Shanel VanSanten finally revealed to TV Line the real reason behind her abrupt exit from The Flash during season 2. While she did indeed book a role on another show, she had been able to work out a schedule to finish her arc on The Flash as well. Unfortunately, VanSanten says one of the series’ showrunners at the time took a personal disliking to her, and forced Patty Spivot to be written out. The Flash had multiple showrunners in season 2, and it’s not clear who she’s referring to.

According to VanSanten, the idea behind her exit was to leave the door open for a return. That’s why then-showrunner Andrew Kreisberg wanted her to be “only a train ride away.” But this return never happened, even though VanSanten has expressed a willingness to come back to the show. An official explanation on why Patty was never used again hasn’t been offered, but her staying away from Barry and Team Flash does make sense. She accomplished what she came to do in Central City and her story was properly wrapped up.

Some were dissatisfied with how her romance with Barry concluded, and would have preferred it to go on a bit longer with Barry bringing Patty into his confidence. However, the opportunity for that has passed. Patty’s biggest connection to The Flash was her romantic relationship with Barry, which the show moved on from long ago. Barry has been married to Iris for years now, so if The Flash did bring back Patty, it’s not clear what her purpose would be. Though she did have a great deal of respect for Joe (Jesse L. Martin), she didn’t have any meaningful relationships with the other main characters, outside of Barry. So while Patty turned out to be a well-liked character with an interesting romantic dynamic with Barry, there isn’t much of a reason for her to come back at this point.
