“Picture it! Sicily. 1922.” The Golden Girls’ Sophia Petrillo is well-known for her stories about Sicily – some of them true, some of them false, but all of them hilarious. The matriarch of the golden girls, Sophia is stern, stubborn, silly, witty and a good cook. These qualities win her the hearts of everyone she comes in contact with in Miami, although she drives Dorothy crazy.

One of TV’s wisest old owls, Sophia has become a cultural icon, representing the firm, but loving mother figure. A woman in her 80s, Sophia has picked up a few bits of wisdom on her life journey and is always happy to share them with Dorothy, Blanche and Rose.

10 On Passion

Sophia teaches audiences to never forgo passion at the right time, but also never let passion overwhelm one in critical moments.

“Picture it! Sicily. 1912. A beautiful young peasant girl with clear olive skin meets an exciting, but penniless artist. There’s an instant attraction. They laugh. They sing. They slam down a few boilermakers. Shortly afterwards, he’s arrested for showing her how he can hold his palette without using his hands. But, I digress. He paints her portrait, and they make passionate love. She spends much of the next day in the shower with a loofah sponge, scrubbing his fingerprints with her body. She sees the portrait and is insulted. It looks nothing like her! And she storms out of his life forever. That peasant girl was me. And that painter was Pablo Picasso.”

9 On Love

“Dorothy, you were always my favorite. I want you to know that. Maybe I didn’t show it – I’m not an affectionate person. But you are. Don’t tell your sister. And keep the silver. You know, I’ll probably see your father in Heaven. I haven’t seen him in 30 years. I’m an idiot. I didn’t think this would happen. I didn’t think I’d die. Listen, before you know if I could be gone, and we won’t have said some important stuff. I love you, Dorothy. Just remember that. I love you very, very much.”

Love is a very, very important thing for Sophia. She teaches in this heartfelt scene that life is short and that opportunities to tell loved ones how one feels are not to be squandered.

8 On Therapy

“A psychiatrist? Please! In the old days, we didn’t need psychiatrists. You had a problem, you fought, you drank, you got a little on the side. You dealt with it!”

Sophia might be wise, but she is still a woman of her time. Born at the beginning of the 20th-century, Sophia does not understand therapy and believes the old way of repressing and self-medicating is the best. For Sophia, when people face their problems head-on, it leads to trouble and families fall apart. Nevertheless, therapy makes her see the value of communication and she changes her mind on the topic.

7 On Vanity

Sophia often made fun of Blanche and demonstrated here that she believed that under no circumstance should a person be vain. She teaches a valuable lesson via this tale from her youth.

“Blanche is a very vain person, and vanity can be a terrible thing. I should know. I used to be vain myself. When I was a teenager, I was gorgeous. Eyes as deep and black as ripe olives. Skin as smooth and creamy as fresh butter. Hair, flaming red, like a rich marinara sauce. I was the most gorgeous girl in the village, and I could have my pick of the town’s most eligible goat farmers. Until Anna Maria Alonzo-Paladino (known to her friends as Muffin) moved to our village. Suddenly all the men who were always fighting over [me] were after Muffin. I was too vain to be the second most beautiful girl in the village. [Muffin] offered to move to the neighboring village. But it all backfired in my face, because the next day all the good-looking men in the village followed her.”

6 On Business

“Dorothy, this could be my big chance. With the exposure I get from Rose’s movie, I could hawk my recipes all over the country. If you want to move your product, you gotta have exposure. All the great Italian chefs had it. Mama Celeste, Chef Boyardee and Chef Balducci. Oh right. [Balducci] didn’t have television exposure. That was indecent exposure. He should have stuffed the cannelloni in the traditional manner.”

Sophia believed that in business, there is such a thing as too much exposure and all business owners must be careful not to get bad publicity.

5 On Truth

“Picture this! Sicily. August 1908. No, that’s not it. But if you ever need a story about jealousy, this one’s a pip. No, I remember. Havana. 1957. No, I was never in Havana. I meant Brooklyn. 1958. No, that’s not it. I don’t believe it. I’m dry. I got nothing! I just can’t leave you hanging! In lieu of a story, would you settle for a very wise observation?”

In a rare moment on the show, Sophia has no story or anecdote that correlates with an event in her daughter’s life. Knowing this is a teachable moment and not wanting to waste it, the mother tells the truth that she is dry on stories and offers something else instead.

4 On Lies

“I knew a woman – never had her period. Then at 72, she had a baby!” Sophia is prone to making up grandiose, implausible stories. Dorothy accuses her of making up stories, but this never deters Sophia from adding more flavor to her tales.

When Blanche struggles with going through menopause, the girls gather around a kitchen table, as usual, to talk about their lives. The topic of menstruation comes up and Sophia chimes in with a quick, obviously untrue story about the 72-year-old new mother. Although she admits it was a lie, she also adds that she told the story to cheer Blanche up. Sometimes, ridiculous stories are all that is left to put a smile on a person’s face.

3 On Manipulation

“I saw the doctor yesterday, and – I can’t talk about it. Let’s go to the mall. Alright, you dragged it out of me. He says my heart is a time bomb. But don’t be concerned. Except for the fact that I’ve only made love in one position, I’ve led a very full life. He says any little shock or surprise, then it’s ‘Kaboom.’ I guess all we can do is pray. Unless you know of any surprises, Rose.”

A woman always looking for a get rich quick scheme, Sophia has no problem playing dirty. When Dorothy wouldn’t tell her what her birthday surprise is, she fakes a health emergency to manipulate Rose into telling her what the surprise is. In a turn to the dark side, Sophia teaches that manipulation is sometimes a necessary evil.

2 On Family

“May the hair on your lip grow in the opposite direction and get tangled with the hair that comes down from your nose … You’re nothing but a backstabbing Judas in sensible shoes. May you put your dentures in upside down, and chew your head off! May your moles grow hair thicker than Jerry Vale’s.”

Every instance when Sophia meets her sister, the two have big fights that result in name-calling and curses. But they both learn that family is all they have and so they always reconcile, no matter how long it takes. In Sophia’s world, family is for fighting, but always reconciling.

1 On Morals

“I raised you to have respect for yourself, not be somebody’s floozy!” When Dorothy starts an affair with a married man, Rose and Sophia are disappointed in her and try their best to dissuade her from pursuing the affair any further. Blanche, in true form, encourages Dorothy to continue the affair since it makes her happy. Dorothy gives up the affair for a while, before running back to the married man.

At this point, Sophia tells Dorothy that she raised her daughter to have morals and self-respect. This simple sentence prods Dorothy to finally give up her affair.
