The Help How Each Character Is Supposed To Look

The Help was a movie that was released back in 2011, but before it hit theaters it was an award-winning novel. It is not uncommon for books like this to be turned into films, but oftentimes the cast doesn’t match the characters in the book. The dialogue might be the same, but something is missing when the looks of the characters themselves differ from those that readers remember.

This statement is true for the film, but it is hit or miss depending on the character. It did have an all-star cast, but some of their appearances could have been altered further to match that of the character they were portraying. Keep reading to learn how each character in The Help is supposed to look!

10 Miss Walter

The Help How Each Character Is Supposed To Look

Miss Walter is the mother of Hilly Holbrook and she is your typical elderly woman. She is skinny to the point that she looks underfed and suffers from a condition that causes her to shake and drop things. Sissy Spacek was a bit more agile than one would expect from an elderly woman such as this, but she was cast anyway in this role as the elderly woman.

9 Aibileen Clark

The Help How Each Character Is Supposed To Look

Aibileen Clark is the older maid who wears her experience on her face. She is described as having a visible gold tooth when she smiles and her skin is a shiny dark brown. Her eyebrows are grey, even though her hair is still black, and she does have a bit of extra weight in her midsection. Fans had expected her to look a bit older and worn in the film, but Viola Davis still did a fantastic job in this role.

8 Elizabeth Leefolt

The Help How Each Character Is Supposed To Look

Elizabeth Leefolt is quite skinny in the books, and this was considered during her casting in the film. She is lanky and has brown hair that only looks thinner the way she styles it. Her face is described as pointy and similar to that of the devil on the Red Hots candy box. They really emphasize her severe lack of fat in the book, and Ahna O’Reilly was the perfect fit in this aspect of her appearance.

7 Stuart Whitworth

The Help How Each Character Is Supposed To Look

Stuart Whitworth was the love interest of Skeeter in the book, and in the film, he looks nothing like the character described in the book. The first place it goes wrong is that he is supposed to have light brown curly hair and be quite tall compared to any other man.

The actor, Chris Lowell, did, however, have tanned skin and the clear blue eyes that are mentioned in the story. It is hard to see if he has some blonde stubble in the film, but fans doubt that this detail was added in the film.

6 Minny Jackson

The Help How Each Character Is Supposed To Look

Octavia Spencer was cast in the role of Minny Jackson in the film, and she was a match for this role. This character is about 17 years younger than Aibileen, but she is quite strong. Her stature is thicker than most and she is quite a bit shorter than the other maids in the book. Her hair is that of black curls, and she has a large mouth that isn’t afraid to spit out the truth.

5 Johnny Foote

The Help How Each Character Is Supposed To Look

The description of Johnny Foote is left up to the imagination for the most part, but readers did understand that he was a very attractive man. The book describes his character as about six-foot-two and quite strong. He does supposedly have a little bit of fat in his gut and eyes that are the key to his emotions. Mike Vogel might not have been a perfect fit, although, he fit the bill enough for people to love this character.

4 Hilly Holbrook

The Help How Each Character Is Supposed To Look

Hilly Holbrook is played by Bryce Dallas Howard in the film, but they are far from similar. The character in the book has dark brown hair and a round face, as well as olive-colored skin. She did have the freckles but was lacking the moles that they mention in the book.

She also has a larger backside, although, she is quite petite in the film. The book also describes her wardrobe as filled with red plaid, which fans don’t see, but they are more childish as it describes.

3 Charlotte Phelan

The Help How Each Character Is Supposed To Look

This was one of the best castings in the whole film as Allison Janney was a perfect match for this role. Charlotte Phelan is described as having eagle eyes that don’t miss a thing. She is also known for wearing simplistic country clothing that is generally a single color. The appearance of this character is a pretty face that wears powdered makeup and never forgets to add lipstick. Her blue eyes are a striking feature, and this actress managed to play the role of a woman who grew sicker as the film went on.

2 Celia Foote

The Help How Each Character Is Supposed To Look

Jessica Chastain looks a lot like her character, Celia Foote, as this character is described as looking similar to Marilyn Monroe. Her blonde hair is up in a fancy hairdo covered in mounds of hairspray and she wears fake eyelashes. This character’s makeup always seems caked on and her outfits are at the height of fashion. She always appears desperate and out of place as she tries her best to fit in with the glamorous crowds, despite her poor upbringing.

1 Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan

Eugenia Phelan, also known by her nickname ‘Skeeter,’ is described as an excessively tall and skinny woman in the book, which is where the similarities between the book and Emma Stone seem to end. She is supposed to have blonde hair that is cut above her shoulders as it has a tendency to frizz. This character always dresses in clothes that someone else picked out for her, and the same can be said for this character in the film.
