The Incredibles Theory Edna Mode Designed Syndromes Costume

The Incredibles, Pixar’s 2004 superhero movie, is full of larger-than-life characters. It was the first Pixar film to focus on an entirely human cast, and this experiment paid off in spades. Brad Bird and his team created a world packed with superheroes, goons and ordinary citizens that are beloved and easily recognizable by audiences everywhere.

Two of the film’s most iconic characters, though, are Edna Mode and Syndrome. Edna is an eccentric fashion designer and the person who designed the suits worn by the world’s superheroes, while Syndrome is a former fanboy of Mister Incredible who was rejected by his idol and became a supervillain dedicated to wiping out heroes everywhere. But while the two don’t have an on-screen relationship with one another, there may have been a hidden connection between them that makes Edna the true hero of the film.

After undertaking his first mission as Mister Incredible in years, Bob Parr rips his costume and goes to Edna. She complains about her current work and reminisces on the “glory days” of superheroes while working on a design for a new costume for Bob. At one point, Bob suggests adding a cape and is scolded by Edna, who reminds him of various accidents sustained by cape-wearing superheroes, including a heroine named Stratogale who got sucked into a jet engine.

Later on, it’s revealed that Bob has been doing missions for a man named Buddy Pine. Buddy was Mister Incredible’s biggest fan in the “glory days” and knew everything about him. Things even escalated to the point where Buddy made his own costume and tried to aid his idol in fighting crime. Mister Incredible rejected Buddy, which inadvertently sent him down a path of anger and hate, eventually leading to him developing the supervillain persona of Syndrome.

It stands to reason that as he was seriously developing his Syndrome identity, Buddy would want to find out where Mister Incredible’s costume came from so he could replicate it. Edna is established to be a fairly well-known figure in this world, so she likely would be fairly easy to track down. If Buddy showed up at her door asking to design an outfit for him years after heroes were made illegal, it stands to reason she would jump at the opportunity, especially considering Buddy is shown to be incredibly wealthy.

As proven at the end of the short film Jack-Jack Attack, however, Buddy is a bad liar, and Edna isn’t stupid. It wouldn’t take much for someone of her intelligence to figure out that Syndrome doesn’t have the best of intentions, and with that being the case, she would likely want to add something to the suit to serve as a safety precaution, such as a cape.

At the end of the film, Syndrome is sucked into a jet engine by his own cape, closely paralleling Stratogale’s end. The moment renders Bob and Edna’s earlier conversation as clever foreshadowing, but also may hint at an even deeper connection between the two — they were brought about by Edna’s suits. Considering Edna seems to be the predominant costume designer in the film’s universe, it’s likely she created the outfits of all the superheroes who died by their capes. However, if this theory is true, she also managed to balance the scales by putting a failsafe in Syndrome’s outfit.
