The Last of Us 2 Safes Are WAY Easier To Unlock Than You Think

There are plenty of safes to discover and unlock in The Last of Us: Part 2, and hitting all of the locations may be easier than players think. In fact, Naughty Dog, the game’s developers, may have made breaking in to safes a little too easy.

The highly anticipated sequel released on June 19th, 2020, after numerous delays and a multi-year gap between The Last of Us: Part 2 and the original. The reactions to The Last of Us 2 have been mixed since the game launched, with many people criticizing controversial story points and plot twists which have left fans of the franchise divided.

Another reason to either be critical or praising of The Last of Us: Part 2 is the way the game handles safes. It hasn’t taken players very long to realize just how easy breaking into a safe in The Last of Us: Part 2 can be, and when it’s this simple, it takes away from the overall gaming experience.

Why The Last Of Us 2’s Safes Are Too Easy

In The Last of Us games, finding the safe is only half of the difficulty. Generally, the safes are tucked away somewhere that’s not visible when the player first enters a room, and they need to walk around a bit before an icon will appear alerting them to the location. Even afterwards, the player still needs to figure out a way to unlock the safe. This can usually be achieved by searching for more clues – a key hidden in a drawer or a note left on a piece of paper. The games certainly don’t make it easy to find the clue, even in The Last of Us 2, so it’s all the more rewarding when players finally get inside the safe and reap its rewards.

But it turns out there’s a simple way to open the lock than running around trying to find clues – simply listen closely. If players turn up the volume on their audio device, or use headphones, they should be able to hear the different way a lock clicks when it hits the right numbers, making it easy to decipher the code and unlock the safe’s contents. This is more apparent (and easier) in The Last of Us: Part 2’s gameplay than it was in the original, and despite being a popular way to unlock safes in movies, frankly, it’s a disappointment.

Once players figure this out it takes away the incentive to keep searching for clues. If a player is paying less attention to the details around them, it’s easy to miss important features in The Last of Us, like notes hidden in drawers or extra bullets tucked into a corner of the room. Moreover, there’s less satisfaction upon opening the safe if players were able to do it with minimal effort, thereby making the game less rewarding and difficult. This also threatens to majorly cut down the player’s game time, since they’ll spend less time searching for clues, thus reducing their gameplay experience even more. The safes in The Last of Us: Part 2 are way too easy to access, and it puts a damper on the overall gaming experience once players realize this trick.
