The Magicians: 5 Characters Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Didn’t)

The Magicians ended with a fifth and final season, ending on a high note. Which characters got fitting endings, and which ones deserved better?

Based on the series of books by Lev Grossman, The Magicians became one of the most groundbreaking fantasy shows of the last few years. Best described as a grown-up version of Harry Potter mixed with Game of Thrones, the series was praised for its boundary-pushing storylines, its diversity, and for never shying away from tackling difficult issues.

The fifth and final season saw the characters on even more fantastic adventures that included breaking the moon and creating a new world. Overall, the series ended on an uncharacteristically positive note and left many fans satisfied. Yet, while some characters got the endings they deserved some, unfortunately, did not.

10 Fitting Ending: Josh

Josh Hoberman entered the show as little more than comedic relief but soon turned into one of the series’ most beloved characters. As perhaps the most Fillorian human out of the other magicians, it is fitting that he is one of the characters that ended up on Fillory 2.0.

The last few seasons saw Josh grow from a loveable sidekick to one of the most reliable and supportive members of the team. Deservedly, he has the loves of his life: magic, Margo, and a field of Margherita pizzas.

9 Deserved More: Julia

Julia more than anyone else deserved a happy ending and for the most part, she got one. Julia has Penny, their daughter Hope Quentin and they end the series on a quest to find their missing friends.

Yet, fans are still left wondering about goddess Julia. In the season four finale, while she was unconscious, Penny-23 made the choice for her to stay human. Given all that Julia went through to become a goddess, it is a little disheartening that she didn’t have a say in it and that it was never brought up again.

8 Fitting Ending: Kady

For most of the series, the often underestimated Kady struggled to find where she belonged. Sidelined more often than not, she uncomfortably straddled the line between the classically trained magicians and the hedge witches.

Fortunately, the later seasons saw a significant change in Kady. Starting with her memories of Detective Sam Cunningham, Kady rediscovered her place with the hedge witches and eventually started to slowly close the gap between them and the other magicians. In the end, it is fitting that Kady happily found her place and purpose as their leader.

7 Deserved More: Alice

To say that Alice deserved a better ending is a little controversial as she had one of the best character arcs in the final season. She worked through her grief, went on her own quest, saved Fillory, and became a master magician.

At the end of the series, Alice is on New Fillory. This just doesn’t make sense for her character. Unlike the others, Alice doesn’t have as much of an attachment to Fillory and as a new master magician, it isn’t clear how she will be able to improve her newly found skills in this world. Sadly, for Alice, her new life seems more like the ending to her story instead of a new beginning.

6 Fitting Ending: Penny-40 And Penny-23

The Magicians is a weird show and there are multiple versions of certain characters and it only makes sense to see how both Penny’s ended up. Penny-40 started the series as a traveler struggling with who he was. Just as he figured it out, he was hastily killed off. Yet, while working in the underworld, Penny-40 finally got the peace and purpose that he had yearned for.

Alternatively, Penny-23 was someone who had everything and then lost it. When he moved timelines, he seemed very out of place. Through becoming a professor, his relationship with Julia, and even partially reconciling with his mother, Penny-23 was able to build a new and happy life with Julia and their baby.

5 Deserved More: Zelda

The Head Librarian Zelda started the series as someone deeply and dangerously loyal to the Library. She eventually saw the errors in her blind faith and became one of the group’s most powerful allies. In particular, she and Alice shared a close relationship and even helped the younger magician to master her craft.

Zelda was killed by Martin Chatwin in the finale. Her sacrifice allowed for the world seed to be kept safe. Although Zelda may have technically just moved branches, she still deserved more than such an unceremonious death.

4 Fitting Ending: Fen

Fen, the knife-loving Fillorian perhaps has one of the most fitting endings of the entire show. Starting as a naive girl forced to marry the High King, the last few seasons saw her finally grow into her own, while also finding her place among the magicians.

Also, she was able to create a new home for her people, with all the best of Earth and her homeworld. Over the years, Fillory had to suffer at the hands of their gods and human rulers and it is perfect that they finally have a home that they deserve,

3 Deserved More: Quentin

The death of Quentin Coldwater was one of the most controversial aspects of the show. In the season four finale, he sacrificed himself to stop Everett from becoming a God. While he did have one of the most touching send-off scenes on TV, many fans felt that his death was more for shock-value than anything else.

Not only was his death sudden but many accused the series of falling into the common trope of killing queer characters. Also, many fans felt the issue of Quentin’s mental health wasn’t addressed properly. As a character suffering from depression, Quentin himself questioned if he had actually tried to kill himself with his sacrifice.

2 Fitting Ending: Margo

Margo Hanson perhaps had the best character growth out of anyone on the show. She transformed from a typical mean girl to one of the most complex and well-developed characters in the series. After almost sacrificing her life to save the people of Fillory, she ended up on Fillory 2.0 as High King Margo the Creator.

Although Margo is without Eliot, she is surrounded by the other significant people in her life, Josh and Fen. The ambitious and uncompromising Margo had to fight for her place in Fillory and her hard-earned leadership skills make her the only one who can lead the Fillorians on their new adventure.

1 Deserved More: Eliot

Out of everyone in the finale, Eliot perhaps has the most unfulfilling ending. Unlike his friends, he didn’t end up on Fillory and instead became a new member of the Brakebills faculty and started a new relationship with Charlton.

Yet, his new job and romance feel a little more like a consolation prize than a fitting ending for one of the show’s most beloved characters. As the former High King, it makes no sense that he doesn’t at least get to go to the New Fillory. More importantly, Eliot without Margo just doesn’t seem right. As a character who had experienced a lot of trauma in the last few seasons, Eliot just deserved better.
