Moff Gideon is the main villain of The Mandalorian, but what happened to him before the show’s events? The first two seasons of The Mandalorian featured Giancarlo Esposito playing the looming threat to Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu aka Baby Yoda. Even though his screentime has been limited, the impact that he’s had on the first live-action Star Wars series is significant.

It wasn’t until the final episodes of The Mandalorian season 1 that Moff Gideon made his debut, revealing himself to be the one who wanted Baby Yoda’s blood. After his forces nearly killed the main characters in an attempt to get Grogu, Din believed he killed Gideon when he shot his TIE fighter out of Nevarro’s sky. But Gideon returned in The Mandalorian season 2 with a vengeance. He unleashed an army of dark troopers to kidnap Baby Yoda and continued the experiments based around Grogu’s high midichlorians count. However, Gideon was defeated by the end of the season and is now in Din Djarin’s custody heading into season 3. But what do we know about his past?

Gideon’s screentime in The Mandalorian might not be as high as many other characters, but the show has still revealed several details about his backstory. The show has confirmed that he was an officer for the Imperial Security Bureau during the Empire’s reign. It is not known when he began working for the Galactic Empire. His involvement with the ISB led him to take part in the Great Mandalorian Purge. This event saw Gideon fighting with the Empire against Mandalore, which led to the victorious Empire confiscating beskar and nearly wiping out the Mandalorians.

It was presumably during the Great Purge that Gideon came into possession of the Darksaber. The powerful Mandalorian weapon was last known to be the property of Bo-Katan Kryze, who later became the leader of Mandalore. The Mandalorian showed Bo-Katan on the hunt to find Gideon and reclaim the Darksaber, but Din Djarin defeated Gideon in a fight and unintentionally became the rightful owner of the Darksaber as he wasn’t aware the Darksaber was won by defeating its current owner in combat. It’s now believed Bo-Katan lost the Darksaber to Gideon during the Great Purge, but it’s unknown how and when Gideon managed to disarm Bo-Katan to acquire the Darksaber.

By the time the Empire fell, Gideon had achieved the Imperial rank of Moff. Thanks to this position, he became the leader of some remnants of the Empire. During this time, he began searching for Grogu, which could be part of the plan to help further the attempts to clone Emperor Palpatine, perhaps using Baby Yoda’s blood. Gideon managed to mostly operate in the shadows during this time as it was widely believed he had been executed for his war crimes. Somehow, he’d managed to fake his own death and made it convincing enough that even Cara Dune believed him to be dead. The Mandalorian isn’t done with Moff Gideon yet, so expect more information on his past to be revealed in future seasons or even in the spinoffs.
