Warner Bros. unveiled The Matrix Awakens with a stunning trailer that only captures a fraction of the entire tech demo.

Revealed during The Game Awards 2021, the trailer for The Matrix Awakens includes a mixture of gameplay and cinematics. Keanu Reeves, who plays both himself and Neo, invites players into the world of The Matrix, where they must assist Carrie-Ann Moss in escaping a collection of deadly agents. While not mechanically complex, the experience is meant to showcase the power of Unreal Engine 5. The attention to detail and level of animation is an incredible feat, made even more impressive by the fact that an entire world is explorable. The Matrix Awakens isn’t just an example of graphical fidelity, it’s also a simulation of a digital city, complete with pedestrians, traffic and photorealistic lighting.

Players are able to move about the city either on foot or via a drone which captures a bird’s eye view of the location. According to the official announcement post on Epic Games’ website, The Matrix Awakens includes, “seven thousand buildings made of thousands of modular pieces, 45,073 parked cars (of which 38,146 are drivable), over 260 km of roads, 512 km of sidewalk, 1,248 intersections, 27,848 lamp posts, and 12,422 manholes. Nanite intelligently streams and processes those billions of polygons, rendering everything at film quality, super fast.”

The team behind The Matrix Awakens, which consists of several veterans of the franchise, including director Lana Wachowski, captured many of the cinematic shots by translating actual camera footage into Unreal Engine 5. “When I told them I was making another Matrix film, they suggested I come and play in the Epic sandbox,” says Wachowski. “And Holy Sh*t, what a sandbox it is!”

The Matrix Awakens has received almost universal praise. While it may be a simple tech demo, fans of the technology are impressed by how much detail was squeezed into such a comparatively gigantic project. Wachowski continued on to say, “Keanu, Carrie, and I had a blast making this demo. The Epic sandbox is pretty special because they love experimenting and dreaming big. Whatever the future of cinematic storytelling, Epic will play no small part in its evolution.”

The Matrix Awakens is available to download for free for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. At the time of writing, there are no plans to bring it to PC.
