The MCU Confirmed Its New Deadliest Weapon

Warning: SPOILERS for What If…? episode 3.

Marvel’s What If…? confirms that the Pym Particles are the MCU’s new deadliest weapon. After three consecutive live-action series, Marvel Studios has released its first animated project which imagines how the Infinity Saga would’ve panned out if a certain aspect of it was changed. Based on the ’70s comics with the same name, What If…? further widens the MCU’s multiverse after it was unleashed at the end of Loki.

Initially, the events of the show were supposed to be entirely separate from the Sacred Timeline. But after the death of He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) resulted in the multiple branches of reality overlapping each other, there’s now a possibility of things happening in the animated series spilling over into the primary MCU continuity. So, after seeing what the Pym Particles are able to accomplish in What If…? episode 3, “What If… The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes,” they essentially become the franchise’s new deadliest weapon.

Mining inspiration from Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) Big Week, What If…? episode 3 sees the SHIELD director begin to assemble the Avengers. Unfortunately, they were all killed by a grieving Hank Pym (Michael Douglass) as evil Yellowjacket, who used his Pym Particles to execute the assassination of the five original Avengers. Among the bunch, however, arguably the most interesting death from the What If…? episode was Hulk’s (Mark Ruffalo). Entering Bruce Banner’s bloodstream after posing as a bullet, Pym launches a Pym Particle Disc at the green rage monster’s heart. Soon after, it starts to swell, not stopping until it explodes on his chest, effectively killing the Hulk. What makes Pym’s move more fascinating is the fact that it was also around the same time when Bruce discovered that he was essentially immortal. As he recalled in The Avengers, he tried shooting himself in the mouth, but his alter-ego simply spat it out, not letting the both of them die.

If the Pym Particles can kill a near-indestructible being as the Hulk, then suffice to say, the same thing can easily happen to anyone else in the MCU. Inadvertently, What If…? also proves a previous theory about how Thanos (Josh Brolin) could’ve easily been defeated by Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) by shrinking going inside the Mad Titan, and then growing big. Obviously that couldn’t happen in Avengers: Infinity War because Scott Lang didn’t appear in that film. So seeing how it could’ve been executed in the animated series is very interesting. With that, it’s curious what other ways the Pym Particles are able to do. The myriad of ways that Pym was able to kill Fury’s Avengers’ recruits in What If…? episode 3 just by changing in sizes opens up a world of possibilities on how this particular super skill can be used in the MCU moving forward.

No wonder Pym was extremely protective of who has access to the Pym Particles in the main MCU. He knows full well how dangerous they could be if they fall into the wrong hands. This also makes him and his creation all the more impressive. Hence why out of all the geniuses in the franchises, he’s dubbed to be the greatest.
