The MCU Messed Up Its Thor What If Question Twice

Warning: This article contains spoilers for What If…? episode 7.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe mishandled Thor’s episode of Marvel’s What If…?, messing up twice in a story about Thor not having a sibling. What If…? episode 7 made Thor (Chris Hemsworth) an only child, which instantly changes the MCU. Because of the alternate story, 2011’s Thor and 2012’s The Avengers never happen. Instead, Thor becomes Party Thor and travels to Earth when his mother, Frigga (voiced by Josette Eales), is away. On the planet, he parties with an eclectic lineup of characters from the MCU, including Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), Korg (Taika Waititi), and Howard the Duck (Seth Green). Frost Giant Loki (Tom Hiddleston) also surprisingly joins the party, and apparently, he’s good friends with Thor.

Loki and Thor’s relationship defined the early days of the MCU. In Thor, the God of Thunder attacks Jotunheim and gets banished to Earth, allowing Loki to take over Asgard. However, the God of Mischief soon discovers his true parentage, learning that he’s a Frost Giant and Odin (Anthony Hopkins) took him from Jotunheim as a baby. The truth fuels Loki’s hatred of Thor even more, and he tries to destroy Jotunheim to prove to Odin that he’s worthy of Asgard. However, Thor foils his brother’s plot, and Loki returns in The Avengers, looking to rule over Earth instead.

What If…? seemingly messes up multiple times when it comes to Thor’s episode about being an only child. In What If…? episode 7, Thor comes to Earth and simply parties. He’s arrogant and has all the worst parts of a frat-like mentality, but that’s the extent of his issues. While Thor may not necessarily seem worthy of Mjolnir, he’s still a kind-hearted Asgardian. His parties can have world-ending consequences, which puts him on the wrong side of Captain Marvel (voiced by Alexandra Daniels), but he relents in the end. The party concludes without any devastating damage. The episode is confusing because being an only child doesn’t truly change Thor. Additionally, he may not be an only child after all. Though Odin doesn’t raise Loki alongside Thor, What If…? seems to forget about Cate Blanchett’s Hela, a.k.a. Thor’s sister.

Thor’s What If…? episode is confusing. Thus far, What If…? has changed MCU stories and cast familiar characters in a new perspective. However, Thor’s story about being an only child doesn’t truly change him. Though he’s arrogant and headstrong in the episode, he was the same way in 2011’s Thor. In both the film and the episode, Thor initially did things his own way before realizing his actions were wrong. Additionally, Hela appears to be an egregious oversight. While the episode purports that Thor is an only child, it doesn’t clarify whether or not Hela exists. In fact, the What If…? episode shows artwork of Odin and the Frost Giants that seems to indicate the Allfather did conquer worlds in his past, hinting Hela’s storyline may still be intact. So Thor possibly isn’t an only child after all.

Marvel always has the Multiverse to fall back on. It may be infuriating to some fans, but Marvel’s Multiverse provides the studio with endless convenient excuses. Because the Multiverse has infinite possibilities, apparent incongruities aren’t actually incongruities. Marvel can explain plot holes away or correct them at a later date. So while it seems like What If…? made multiple errors in its episode about Thor, Marvel can always present a worthy excuse.
