Warning: this article contains spoilers for The Next Batman #1

It isn’t just the heroes that are getting a fresh new start in DC Comics’ latest event Future State, but the villains as well. It’s always exciting when both sides of the coin get fresh takes and a chance to evolve. Nowhere is this truer than in The Next Batman companion story Future State: Arkham Knights. The first chapter of writer Paul Jenkins and artist Jack Herbert’s newest team of supervillains turned heroes fighting against a fascist regime launched this week. Their appearance on the scene is good timing considering that under the crushing tyranny of The Magistrate and its paramilitary forces, Batman and his allies need all the help they can get.

Created by the legendary writer Gerry Conway and veteran artists Don Newton and Gene Colan, Waylon Jones, aka Killer Croc, has been a staple member of the Dark Knight’s rogues’ gallery since he first appeared in Detective Comics in 1983. Over the decades the character has famously appeared in comics, video games (Batman Arkham series), blockbuster feature films (2016’s Suicide Squad), and seminal cartoons like Batman: The Animated Series. He’s been around and is instantly recognizable for his monstrous reptilian physique and incredible strength. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

Hunted down by The Magistrate’s Peacekeepers, Killer Croc is gravely wounded. On death’s door, all he wishes for is a quick death. Fortunately for him, it isn’t the Grim Reaper that has come calling, but Astrid Arkham and her loyal band of super-criminals turned vigilante strike force: The Knights of Arkham. Fans of DC’s Suicide Squad may think this is familiar territory for the comic publisher, but these Knights and their undaunted commander are looking for a willing fighter for the cause. After a successful rescue, the Knights return to their base of operations at Wayne Manor, and quickly get to work at saving Killer Croc’s life, and the task proves easier than they expected.

Killer Croc may look like a frightening creature, but his uncanny physiology has more benefits than just raw physical power. His thick scaly hide is complimented by an accelerated healing factor capable of sustaining him through devastating wounds. In this first chapter of Future State: Arkham Knights, the villain puts himself in a self-induced recuperative coma, and despite the injuries and critical loss of blood, he manages to get himself on the mend.Even Two-Face is amazed by Croc’s speedy recovery.

It’s a good thing to be reminded that there’s always more than meets the eye with even well-known supervillains like Killer Croc. So far, Future State has been full of entertaining surprises. It’s hard to foretell exactly what else DC Comics has in store for readers, but it’s clear that The Knights of Arkham are only getting started.
