The New Superman Is Trying To Keep Metropolis From Becoming Gotham

In a new preview from DC Comics and the upcoming Future State event, the new Superman of Metropolis has much to fear. His entire city will start to fall to greater levels of chaos than it’s ever seen before in the future of the DC Universe, and it’s going to force Jon Kent to make some pretty drastic and unpopular decisions. The rise of increased violence and rioting in the streets will trouble the Man of Steel, so much so that his chief concern will be to ensure that Metropolis won’t become so corrupted and fall so far where it starts to look like the darkness that befell Gotham City.

According to this new preview as well as other teases from DC Comics, both the original Superman (Jon’s father Clark) and Lex Luthor will have been banished from Metropolis, and it seems as though both iconic DC characters’ respective journeys will take them beyond the Earth and among the stars. This will allow new threats to emerge in the future for the Son of Superman to contend with, such as Andrej Trojan and the offspring of the villain Brainiac, known as Brain Cells.

The preview reveals that Trojan is the head of Trojan Solutions, who’s been turning people into nanotech that he was able to manipulate and control, attempting to take over the city as the Free Republic of Metropolis. To make matters worse, the U.S Army arrived to contain the revolution. While this motivated Trojan to flee the city, his technology and those he affected remained, leading to large amounts of unrest. With all of the military, riots, and growing upheaval, Superman fears that his city is becoming as lawless as Gotham in the preview for Future State: Superman of Metropolis #1, which will be coming from writer Sean Lewis with art by John Timms. Here are the preview images from DC Comics:

Unfortunately, the Trojan zealots are made even more volatile due to the influence and control of Brain Cells, a group-mind creation that was created from the remnants of Brainiac, who was destroyed by Superman and Supergirl during the new Man of Steel’s first year on the job. As such, it seems as though Superman feels some sort of connection and/or responsibility for the Brain Cells, despite the U.S army’s demands that he eradicate him. Additionally, teases for this issue and the following one have revealed that Superman’s drastic choice will be the shrinking and bottling of the entire city of Metropolis (using Brainiac’s technology) in order to better keep the city safe.

Superman’s fear and desire to prevent Metropolis from becoming a New Gotham is apparently strong enough to motivate what’s clearly a very rash and unilateral decision, which many living in the city itself are bound to resist and will be unhappy about. In any case, hopefully, this new Superman will realize that the path he’s on in Future State is wrong and very morally questionable.
