Warning! Potential spoilers for The Marvel’s Trial of Magneto #2 below.
Marvel Comics could be hinting at a longtime X-Men character becoming the new Magneto, as the master of magnetism goes on trial for murder. In the upcoming The Trial of Magneto, the current hero will be tried for murder in a mysterious new storyline. As Magneto faces trial, his daughter Polaris could assume his role on Krakoa in his absence.
Lorna Dane, aka Polaris, is one of the oldest X-Men characters. First appearing in X-Men #49 by Arnold Drake and Don Heck back in 1968, Polaris is a key part of the X-family, as she’s been a member of numerous teams including X-Factor and the Starjammers. With the power to control magnetism, Lorna was eventually revealed to be the daughter of Magneto – as the two have clashed in the comics over their histories. In most recent X-comics, she was part of the crime-solving X-Factor team alongside Daken and Northstar. She was also the fan-vote winner to join the new X-Men roster. Now, it seems she’s about to take an even bigger role in the Marvel Universe.
In a new cover reveal for the upcoming The Trial of Magneto #2, Polaris is seen holding her father’s white helmet. The miniseries, by Leah Williams and Lucas Werneck, is set to see Magneto go on trial for a horrific murder committed at the X-Men’s Hellfire Gala – which could be as deadly as Game of Thrones’ Red Wedding – that’s going to divide the entire mutant nation of Krakoa. Polaris, who just joined the X-Men’s main team, will be left to pick up the pieces as her father is put on trial. Check out the issues cover by Gerald Parel.
Polaris’ relationship with Magneto has long been challenging for her, especially given the instability of her past. She’s been quite eager to develop a bond with her father – and may be seen as the bridge that gaps Magneto’s faithful’s on Krakoa with the new X-Men squad. The image of Polaris holding Magneto’s helmet could tease at her role as Krakoa’s new Magneto as he goes on trial or is imprisoned. Considering her wealth of experience and comparable powers, Polaris seems like the only choice to replace Magneto, should the comics go that route. She is unlikely to sit on the sidelines as her father is condemned.
If Polaris doesn’t become the new Magneto in her father’s absence, it seems at the very least, she’s being set up to be one of his students. Still, seeing Polaris with the iconic helmet on and becoming the X-Men’s new Magneto would be a fitting new direction for the character. The Trial of Magneto #2 is in comic book stores in September.
