The teaser trailer for The Nun is here. As successful as both of James Wan’s The Conjuring films have been on both a critical and commercial level so far – hauling in well over $600 million worldwide combined – the same didn’t hold true for 2014’s Annabelle, Warner Bros.’ first attempt at creating a Conjuring spinoff. The decision to spinoff Annabelle made sense, as the titular doll stole every scene that she appeared in during The Conjuring. Still, critics hated the film, and it has acquired quite the bad reputation among horror fans since its release.

Thankfully, the reviews for the second Conjuring spinoff – Annabelle: Creation – were much kinder, with many saying that new director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out) had succeeded in crafting the worthy Annabelle solo movie that fans deserved the first time out. With Creation proving that The Conjuring universe’s spinoffs can be worthwhile projects after all, all eyes now turn to upcoming efforts The Nun and The Crooked Man, solo films centered on two villains from 2016’s The Conjuring 2.

Last summer at San Diego Comic-Con, those in attendance were treated to an exclusive first look at the teaser trailer for The Nun. Now, nearly a year later, Warner Bros. has finally opted to release the teaser online, offering interested fans who weren’t lucky enough to attend SDCC 2017 a chance to take in the creepy sights on offer. Check the teaser out above, which features female lead Taissa Farmiga, younger sister of The Conjuring star Vera.

While the above teaser isn’t too complex, it definitely sets an ominous tone for the spin-off, which is directed by genre up-and-comer Corin Hardy, who recently became the latest director to publicly back out of helming the seemingly cursed Crow reboot. Co-written by franchise creator James Wan and Annabelle and Creation writer Gary Dauberman, The Nun focuses on a seasoned nun (Charlotte Hope, Game of Thrones), a catholic priest with a dark past (Demián Bichir, Alien: Covenant), and a young novitiate (basically a nun in training, played by Farmiga), who are dispatched by The Vatican to investigate a nun’s mysterious suicide at a Romanian monastery. Naturally, this suicide looks to be connected to the titular demon Valak (Bonnie Aarons, returning from The Conjuring 2).

It still remains to be seen what the in-universe explanation for Valak once again assuming the terrifying nun form will be, as it was previously explained that the demon took on that guise in order to specifically taunt Lorraine Warren, a devout Catholic. Perhaps Valak takes on that form when facing off with anyone of deep religious faith, but for now, it’s still a question that needs answering. Whatever the explanation ends up being, Valak looks primed and ready to scare the hell out of a whole new batch of moviegoers.
