The Office: 10 Times Michael Was The Most Mature Character
Michael Scott from The Office is often depicted as being immature, but there are many instances where he surprised the audience by acting maturely.

The US version of The Office has become one of the most beloved sitcoms in recent history, thanks in large part to the star-making performance by Steve Carell as Michael Scott, the Regional Manager of the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin. With a tendency to make bad decisions and say offensive things, Michael Scott created many of the cringe-worthy moments on the show.
However, while Michael Scott is often depicted as being juvenile and sophomoric, there are many instances in which he caught the audience by surprise and demonstrated his maturity, proving that he is capable of more than just “that’s what she said” jokes and one-liners.
10 He Shows Jim Some Grace
In the season 4 episode “Survivor Man,” Michael feels excluded when he is not invited to a corporate wilderness retreat and heads off into nature to prove he can survive, leaving Jim in charge of the office while he is gone. Jim makes the ill-conceived decision to combine the birthday celebrations of multiple employees, before eventually rescinding this idea.
Jim is relieved when Michael returns and reassumes the leadership role. Jim confesses his mistake to Michael and rather than teasing him or making him feel even worse than he already does, Michael takes the high road and comforts him by saying that it is a mistake every new leader makes.
9 Father Figure To Erin
Michael’s immaturity is on display for most of the season 7 episode, “Viewing Party,” in which everyone goes over to Gabe’s house to watch an episode of Glee. Michael is annoyed with Gabe and does his best to ruin the party. However, when he walks out of the party, Erin confronts him and Michael realizes that she sees him as a father figure.
Michael responds to this revelation by lightening the mood and jokingly issuing some fatherly commands to her. This moment completely changes their dynamic and Michael and Erin develop a special, mutually protective relationship.
8 His Lowkey Goodbye
For much of the show, Michael does whatever he can to have all the attention on himself. That is what makes his exit from the show in the season 7 episode, “Goodbye, Michael,” so surprising. Michael lies about his last day at the office, leaving a day before everyone thinks he will. This allows him to say goodbye to everyone without being the center of attention.
He displays an incredible amount of maturity in this episode, leaving everyone with one last conversation or gift before he leaves. Michael does not need a big party or celebration, he just wants one more heartfelt moment with each of his coworkers, even Toby.
7 He Stands Up To Jan
The season 4 episode, “The Deposition,” sees Michael put in a difficult position when Jan sues Dunder Mifflin for wrongful termination. While he is initially ready to testify on her side, she betrays his trust by submitting his personal diary as evidence without his permission. This causes Michael to flip to the other side and defend Dunder Mifflin against her.
Michael and Jan have an unhealthy relationship and he often does not speak up for himself. But this is an instance in which he did not allow Jan to take advantage of him or others.
6 Company Picnic
After Michael and Holly start dating, Holly is transferred to the Nashua branch to avoid another in-office romance and the two end up breaking up, not wanting a long-distance relationship. In the season 5 episode, “Company Picnic,” the two are reunited for a company picnic. Together, Michael and Holly put on a skit for the employees in attendance and, despite giving away information they should not have, they thoroughly enjoy their time together.
Michael nearly ruins the moment by trying to get back together with Holly, but he decides against it, believing that they will eventually be together in the long run. This rare demonstration of patience ends up being the exact right course of action.
5 He Quits
Michael gets off on the wrong foot with Dunder Mifflin’s new Vice President Charles Miner in the season 5 episode, “New Boss.” Charles Miner prevents Michael from contacting David Wallace directly and begins performing some of Michael’s responsibilities, prompting Michael to wonder if he is being replaced. Michael reaches his breaking point when Charles Miner cancels the party celebrating Michael’s 15 year anniversary with the company.
Michael finally meets with David Wallace face to face and receives an apology, but when he realizes that Charles Miner is not going to be replaced, he quits. While the company was certainly in need of cost-saving measures, Michael deserved some respect for his commitment to Dunder Mifflin and standing up for himself.
4 He Protects Pam And Ryan
After quitting and starting his own paper company, Michael hires Ryan and Pam to join him. Despite the initial struggles of running a start-up, the company is able to steal some clients away from Dunder Mifflin, forcing Dunder Mifflin to buy the company out.
In one of Michael’s smartest moves, he then out-negotiates David Wallace, preying on his job insecurity, and gets him to agree to pay $60,000 for the company and restore Michael to his position. He also gets David Wallace to rehire Ryan and give Pam a job in sales.
3 Pam’s Art Show
In the season 3 episode, “Business School,” Michael is invited to speak at Ryan’s business school class. The presentation does not go well and Michael learns that everyone, including Ryan, believes that his business is doomed to fail. Meanwhile, Pam invites her coworkers to come to see her art at an art show. Only Oscar bothers to come, and she overhears him trashing the quality of her work.
Just as Pam is doubting her ability, Michael shows up and is blown away by her drawing of the Dunder Mifflin office. While he could have allowed his negative experience at business school to make him cynical, Michael has the emotional maturity to affirm Pam and give her a much-needed confidence boost.
2 The Distraction
In the season 6 episode “Murder,” everyone in the office is stressed over Dunder Mifflin’s financial woes, leading to speculation about the future of the company. Michael and Jim clash over how to handle the crisis when Michael organizes a murder mystery game for the office.
While this initially seems like more immaturity from Michael, Michael explains to Jim that the best way to handle the situation is by providing the staff with a distraction since the news is out of their control. Jim eventually comes to understand and appreciate Michael’s leadership.
1 He Picks Holly Over Work
After a long and complicated romantic history, Michael and Holly finally get engaged in the season 7 episode, “Garage Sale.” Despite his over-the-top ideas for how to propose, Michael ends up proposing to Holly in a sweet and romantic way and she says “yes.”
However, Michael knows that marrying Holly includes moving to Colorado so she can take care of her aging parents. Much of Michael’s time on The Office revolved around him treating his coworkers like family because he lacked meaningful personal relationships outside of work. But in some of his final moments on the show, Michael demonstrates maturity in giving up his work in order to pursue the most important relationship in his life.
