The Office Amy Adams Almost Returned After Season 2 (Why She Didnt)

Amy Adams nearly reprised her role as Katy in season 7 of The Office, which would have been five years after her original stint ended. Across the NBC sitcom’s broadcast run, Adams served as one of the most notable guest stars. Before her arc, Adams appeared in popular TV shows like That ‘70s Show, Charmed, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and The West Wing. She also worked on films such as Drop Dead Gorgeous, Cruel Intentions 2, and Catch Me If You Can. Even though Adams was acquiring roles, her acting career truly took off during her time on The Office.

Katy was first introduced in The Office’s sixth overall episode, “Hot Girl,” as the purse saleswoman that visited Dunder Mifflin. Manager Michael Scott (Steve Carell) allowed her to set up shop in the conference room due to her attractiveness. While she caught the eye of almost every male in the workplace, Michael went out of his way to impress her. Despite some of their best efforts, it was Jim (John Krasinski) who ended up giving Katy a ride home.

Following Adams’ work in The Office season 1, she went on to star in a comedy-drama called Junebug. Her performance resulted in an Academy Award nomination, which led to doubts about her return to the sitcom. Even though Adams was a star on the rise, she agreed to return as Katy much to the delight of the cast and crew. In season 2’s “The Fire,” it was revealed that Jim and Katy were officially dating. He would later invite her on the Dunder Mifflin booze cruise a few episodes later. Jim became so heartbroken after Pam (Jenna Fischer) and Roy (David Denman) set a wedding date that he broke up with Katy on the spot. The episode marked Adams’ last appearance on The Office, but there was an effort to have her return for a very special season 7 episode: “Threat Level Midnight.”

The Original Plan For Amy Adams’ Return To The Office

Before Steve Carell exited The Office in season 7, the writers wanted to do a unique episode that would serve as a nod to Michael’s past. They decided to transform the “Threat Level Midnight” script from season 2 into a homemade film starring Michael’s friends and coworkers. Not only were current characters featured, but the episode brought back a few familiar faces like Roy, Jan, and Karen. Originally, there were plans for Adams to reprise her role as Katy, who would have been a “floozy” in the action film. Once the scene played, Katy was supposed to have a solo talking head to reveal her whereabouts in present day.

While Adams was game for returning to The Office, her busy schedule got in the way. The two sides tried to come up with a plan, even if it meant shooting out of order. Unfortunately, both parties couldn’t make it work, but it was revealed that she sent a letter to the cast and crew, reiterating how much fun she had during her time on the series. Around the time the episode was being filmed, Adams was working on David O. Russell’s The Fighter in addition to 2011’s The Muppets. Though it would have been interesting to see where Katy ended up, her fate is left a mystery to this day. Adams, however, would go on to reunite with Carell in 2018’s Vice.
