The Offices Threat Level Midnight Is Getting Its Own Graphic Novel

Any true fan of The Office knows that if there’s trouble brewing and the world is at stake, there’s only one man for the job: Agent Michael Scarn. The secret agent brainchild of Steve Carell’s Michael Scott – conceptualized for his pet project movie Threat Level Midnight – Scarn is now leaping from the screen to the page with an upcoming graphic novel adaptation.

The concept of Threat Level Midnight was first introduced to the world in the season 2 episode “The Client,” which saw the office staff discover Michael’s unfinished screenplay for his epic spy thriller and performing a table read. Though it wouldn’t be until the season 7 episode, aptly titled “Threat Level Midnight,” that fans got to see the actual finished product, though calling it “finished” is probably being generous. A production that took Michael 11 years to put together, the movie saw Scott as Agent Scarn, a spy who retreated into retirement after the death of his wife, Catherine Zeta-Scarn, at the hands of the sinister Golden Face (portrayed by John Krasinski’s Jim Halpert). The following plot was as convoluted as it was hilarious, involving a scheme to blow up the NHL All-Star Game with an explosive hockey puck, a traitorous president, and more of exactly the type of ridiculous fantasy wish-fulfillment fans would expect to come from Michael Scott. The “movie” was such a hit among fans, that The Office’s official YouTube channel made the entire 25-minute short available for free to watch, with the video currently hovering at about 9 million views.

Now, what was essentially Michael’s fanfic insanity is making its way into graphic novel form, courtesy of Who Comics. Set to release later this year, Threat Level Midnight will adapt the equal-parts-thrilling-and-absurd story for fans who still can’t get enough of The Office in their lives. The book is available for preorder now at dundermifflinpaper.com (seriously) with a price tag of $40, though, as of the time of this writing, it’s on sale for just $20. Details are pretty scarce about the book, but it’s said to be releasing mid-to-late 2021 and expected to be about 60 pages long.

While there’s not much known about the book itself, this won’t be the first time Who Comics has explored and expanded upon the world of The Office. Just last year, the publisher released The Adventures of Jimmy Halpert, a real-world version of the in-show comic that Pam made for Jim in season 7. Another, original book, Return of the Office, continues the tale of the workspace and its inhabitants after the series finale, acting as a de facto tenth season (though this time with more zombies). And it’s clear that the passion runs deep for the people behind these books. They also offer a Stanley Hudson-inspired book of crossword puzzles, Dunder Mifflin-branded reams of paper, and even sell Dundie Awards.

Will this be the last time The Office fans ever see Agent Scarn? Hopefully not, but it’s hard to say. As the man said himself, “It’ll take a lot more than a bullet to the brain, lungs, heart, back, and balls to kill Michael Scarn!”
