The Originals 5 Reasons Why Hayley Marshall Was The Queen Of New Orleans (& 5 Why It Was Rebekah)

Hayley Marshall and Rebekah Mikaelson were the leading ladies of The Vampire Diaries spin-off show The Originals. Both were powerful characters who ruled the supernatural community of New Orleans, with Hayley being a hybrid and alpha and Rebekah an Original vampire.

Hayley’s character met a tragic fate in the final season of The Originals, whilst Rebekah left the city her family built for good to start a new life with Marcel. Both characters proved themselves to be fierce and capable leaders throughout the show, but who was the queen of New Orleans? Here are five reasons why it’s Hayley and five why it’s Rebekah.

10 Hayley: She Was The Werewolf Queen

Hayley was born into the Crescent Wolf Pack, one of the strongest and most powerful werewolf families in New Orleans. Klaus comments on this during their tryst in The Vampire Diaries after observing the birthmark on her shoulder, prompting the young werewolf to travel to the city.

Throughout The Originals, Hayley embraces her lineage and rules the Crescent Wolf Pack as their queen. She marries Jackson Kenner to unite the werewolf tribes and bring peace to her people.

9 Rebekah: She’s An Original Vampire

Rebekah Mikaelson is not just any ordinary vampire. Along with her brothers, she is one of the first vampires ever to be created and, as an Original, she has enhanced gifts that surpass the skills of sired vampires.

Rebekah is extra strong and fast and can compel other vampires – unless they have ingested vervain. Her mother Esther, who was a powerful witch, transformed her children into vampires to protect them from the werewolves near their village.

8 Hayley: She Was A Hybrid

However, Hayley Marshall was not just any ordinary werewolf either. After dying in the season one finale with her daughter Hope’s blood in her system, Hayley is transformed into a vampire-werewolf hybrid, inheriting the strength of both species.

Hayley becoming a hybrid gave her control over her werewolf changes as well as making her exceptionally strong and fast. However, she also, unfortunately, gained a vampire’s weakness to the sun, which ultimately led to her death.

7 Rebekah: Her Family Built New Orleans

The Originals moved to New Orleans during the 19th Century and built the city as their home. Rebekah and her brothers settled in the city for decades but had to flee after Rebekah and Marcel lured her father Mikael to New Orleans.

Rebekah returns to New Orleans in The Originals to find her brother Elijah and it is clear that she has unfinished business with the city. It was her home and one of the only places she ever felt truly settled and comfortable.

6 Hayley: She’s An Alpha Werewolf

As the queen of the Crescent Wolf Pack, Hayley Marshall was an alpha werewolf and a powerful figure for the wolves of New Orleans. She marries Jackson Kenner in season two, another alpha werewolf, and the two rule the wolf packs as equals.

Hayley’s status among the werewolves was impressive. Her daughter Hope inherited a powerful legacy from both her parents, a werewolf queen and Original hybrid in their own right.

5 Rebekah: She Fought For Kol

Kol was often overlooked and disregarded by his siblings as a wild card, and his death in season four of The Vampire Diaries is brushed over. However, his second death in The Originals as Kaleb was more impactful, with Rebekah vowing to bring her brother back no matter what it took.

Rebekah remains inside the body of the witch Eva for a while to bring Kol back to life. The Original siblings had devastating clashes with each other but, despite their history, cared for each other deep down.

4 Hayley: She Wasn’t Afraid Of Klaus

Klaus Mikaelson was a complex character. Despite being sympathetic and understandable, the Original hybrid committed countless atrocious acts and hurt everybody in his life who was close to him, including the mother of his daughter.

However, despite Klaus’ power, Hayley was rarely afraid to stand up to Klaus. The two hybrids clash in season three, with Hayley seeking revenge for Klaus imprisoning her in her wolf form.

3 Rebekah: She Was Marcel’s Queen

Marcel and Rebekah’s relationship is one of the most popular pairings in The Originals. The two vampires met whilst Marcel was still human and Klaus’ ward and fell in love with each other over time.

In season one of The Originals, Marcel is firmly established as the king of New Orleans and the two align against Klaus briefly. Rebekah and Marcel leave New Orleans together at the end of The Originals, starting a new life together and leaving the past behind them.

2 Hayley: She Was A Fierce Mother

Hayley shares a brief fling with Klaus during the fourth season of The Vampire Diaries that changes the young werewolf’s life forever. After removing the curse that suppressed his werewolf heritage, Klaus became a hybrid and able to conceive a child, and Hayley gives birth to their daughter Hope in the season one finale.

Hayley was a fierce and devoted mother to Hope and went to great lengths to keep her safe. She sacrificed her life in the final season of the show to save her daughter, watching over Hope from the afterlife after being reunited with Jackson and her family.

1 Rebekah: She Stood By Her Sister

In the second season of The Originals, it is revealed that the Original siblings have an older sister named Freya who is still alive after a thousand years. Freya was taken by their witch aunt Dahlia when she was seven as payment for Esther betraying her sister and meets her sister for the first time after escaping from Dahlia.

Klaus and Elijah distrusted Freya and were reluctant to see her as their sister initially. However, Rebekah warmed to Freya and helped her before she knew that they were related, proving to the powerful witch that she could be a good person.
