The Originals is a hit show that stems from The Vampire Diaries, and there are characters that appear on both. For The Originals, however, there are many characters, old and new, that have made a name for themselves with their smart and witty ways along with their powerful abilities. A lot of them come from a tragic background and therefore make bad decisions, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t clever or aware of the world around them.
Many of them have used their intelligence to protect themselves and their loved ones around them. While a lot of these characters are anti-heroes, and sometimes downright evil, fans can’t deny their smarts and ability to figure out their way in the supernatural world.
10 Hayley
Looking past her impulsive anger and fights, there is an intelligent side to Hayley that fans can see. She experiences an unfortunate circumstance by living with the Mikaelsons for a while, and she is not afraid to speak her mind and let her werewolf roots take over.
Still, she wants what is best for her child and takes the role of protector for Hope in season 5. Many fans enjoyed her introduction on the show and knew that Hayley was going to be a smart female lead, and while that wasn’t always the case, she does prove herself.
9 Rebekah
Rebekah has always depended on others, especially Klaus, and wanted to live a normal human life, but throughout the show, she has gained more confidence in herself and her abilities of the supernatural.
She becomes reckless and her own person, but she still does plenty with helping her family. She does not put herself into many fights, which may be a smart move in itself, but when she does she is powerful and smart with her tactics.
8 Caroline
Caroline is one of the main characters in TVD, but she makes her appearance in a few seasons of the show. While she is known to be an airhead in her early days in the franchise, she becomes more calculated and smarter than people think. While Klaus tries to pursue her, she is not phased or seduced by him.
In season 4, she comes back to help mentor Klaus on how to be the best father he can be. Caroline is one of the most powerful vampires, and with her experience comes intelligence, especially when it comes to being a parent.
7 Camille
Camille started as a human on the show, and the journey she makes through the supernatural world is tough. However, she is a quick thinker and able to cling to some of her human traits before she is turned.
She was also doing a fair amount of investigative work while she was still human, showing her wits. Camille proves herself to be an intelligent woman by adjusting to her new life and seeking to understand the supernatural, even if she wasn’t a vampire for long.
6 Kol
Although he is a sociopath who gets the most thrill out of slaughtering people, Kol does have an intelligent side. He is a witch before he is turned, so he knows a lot about magic, and he also creates dark objects. Not only this, but he learns alongside his siblings.
He tends to think of the best cases in most scenarios, even though he does enjoy a chaotic fight. It may come as a surprise that someone as reckless as Kol is capable of making the smartest decisions, but he has proven himself many times.
5 Freya
Possibly the most beloved sister of the Mikaelson family, Freya has formed lots of resentment from her past, but from this came protection for her family,
Freya has helped many characters, from figuring out the cure for Marcel’s bite, to helping her siblings defeat Dahlia, to becoming a vital piece in the plan to kill Lucien. While Freya may be underrated, especially after her big storylines in season 2, she is still there to help her family and is able to quickly think on her feet.
4 Elijah
Elijah is known to have more strategic plans than the others, and he is fairly intelligent. He is also the most humane vampire of the bunch, and he tends to plan before he takes action, and does not let his emotions get in his way.
While fighting against the Guerrera wolves, Klaus wants to dive in and kill, but Elijah wants to plan first. He is still an unpredictable character, but his words hold meaning, and the way he carries himself and holds promises is what makes his smarts stand out among others.
3 Marcel
Marcel is a man with a plan, and a lot of time, it has been a success. He is able to become to King of New Orleans, along with keeping all the supernatural in line. He is a key role in helping the Mikaelson family and keeping them safe as well. While some fans question him for jumping from one side to another, he always seems to be on the winning team.
He does fairly well at reading people’s behaviors and next movements, and along with all of that, he is the life of the party. While some of his actions and purpose change throughout the show, there is no doubt he makes clever decisions.
2 Klaus
Klaus is one to act upon emotion, but sometimes it was just enough to get him through. This also doesn’t mean he didn’t make good plans. He has outsmarted plenty of people in his life, and his confidence in it shows.
He is not afraid to use manipulation to gain power and put others down for his own good. He kept himself alive for years by leading his enemies on, and then ultimately defeating them. Klaus can be cruel, but his tactics are an overall smart move that fans can’t help but admire.
1 Lucien
Lucien was the king of outsmarting everyone, including the entire Mikaelson family. He is the first person to be turned into a vampire by Klaus, and he spends his time gaining trust and showing the Mikaelson family their future downfall. However, it turns out Lucien is the villain all along and causes destruction by kidnapping Freya and killing other important characters.
While he does eventually die at the hands of Klaus, there is no doubt Lucien’s plan was thorough and deserves some attention. There is little to no sympathy for Lucien, but him outsmarting all of the main characters is an impressive stunt.
