8 The Parent Trap
There are multiple film adaptations of The Parent Trap, but Hayley Mills is particularly memorable in the starring roles. The movie was released on June 21, 1961, and finds two teenage girls named Susan and Sharon butting heads at summer camp. When the two are forced to learn to get along, they soon discover that they have always been twins.
This realization sparks a plot to swap places so that each girl can get to know the parent they never lived with and, eventually, try to bring their mother and father back to one another. Many years later, the movie is still a delight to watch because it tells a compelling story of two sisters who are making up for lost time while helping their estranged parents do the same.
7 A Raisin In The Sun
Lorraine Hansberry’s famous play A Raisin in the Sun made its Broadway debut in 1959 and was turned into a film that was released on May 29, 1961. Daniel Petrie directed the film version, which retained many of the original stage actors, including Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Claudia McNeil, and Diana Sands.
The story follows the Youngers, a Black family that find themselves living in close quarters in their Chicago apartment, hoping for change. However, when they find that they will be receiving payments from an upcoming life insurance check, the family members don’t agree on what to spend the money on. The movie went on to earn two Golden Globe nominations for “Best Actor – Drama ” (Sidney Poitier) and “Best Actress – Drama” (Claudia McNeil).
6 The Hustler
The Hustler was released September 25, 1961, and stars Paul Newman as “Fast” Eddie Felson and Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats. The movie was based on Robert Tevis’ novel, The Hustler, from 1959.
The CinemaScope drama follows Eddie as he decides to challenge Minnesota Fats on his turf. However, he soon finds that everything is not what it seems and he must work on his game further if he wants to be the best. As Roger Ebert aptly wrote, “This is one of the few American movies in which the hero wins by surrendering, by accepting reality instead of his dreams.”
5 Babes In Toyland
Babes in Toyland was released December 14, 1961, and is one of Disney’s oldest Christmas films. It stars Annette Funicello as Mary Contrary, who is supposed to marry a man named Tom Piper (Tommy Sands). However, problems soon arise when Tom is kidnapped by the minions of Barnaby Barnicle (Ray Bolger), who plots to marry Mary and take her inheritance.
Of course, the fantastical world of the film includes the Toymaker (Ed Wynn). The story comes from the 1903 operetta Babes in Toyland by Victor Herbert, and there was also a 1934 film version with Laurel and Hardy. The 1961 version has also made a resurgence on Disney+.
4 Breakfast At Tiffany’s
Although it contained culturally offensive moments that would not fly today, Breakfast at Tiffany’s is one of Audrey Hepburn’s most famous films. It was released on October 5, 1961, and depicted the story in Truman Capote’s novella of the same name.
As Holly Golightly, Hepburn set fashion trends and made “Moon River” a song no one could forget. People across the decades have also taken the iconic New York City photo op in front of the Tiffany’s storefront.
3 West Side Story
West Side Story was the highest-grossing film of 1961, earning $44 million worldwide and $19.5 million in the US. Leonard Bernstein’s renowned musical took the stage in 1957, and the first movie version of West Side Story was released on October 18, 1961.
Directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, this portrayal of the Sharks and the Jets won ten Academy Awards and three Golden Globes, making it a standout film of its decade. Fans of the musical eagerly await the upcoming version directed by Steven Spielberg.
2 Blue Hawaii
Elvis Presley was quite busy making movies throughout the 1960s, and Blue Hawaii is one of his most popular from that time. It came out on November 22, 1961, and featured songs like “Blue Hawaii,” “Aloha Oe,” and “Rock-a-Hula Baby.”
In the story, Chad Gates (Elvis) comes home to Hawaii after leaving the Army. The audience sees him prefer to socialize with his girlfriend, Maile Duval (Joan Blackman) than get to work with his dad at the Great Southern Hawaiian Fruit Company. That’s why he becomes a tour guide at the agency where Maile works.
1 101 Dalmatians
Based on Dodie Smith’s 1956 children’s novel, 101 Dalmatians is one of Disney’s most adventurous animated classics for all ages. The movie was released on January 25, 1961, and made children and adults fall in love with the adorable spotted Dalmatians. Roger and Anita are the perfect owners for Pongo, Perdita, and all the rambunctious puppies.
Although Cruella seeks to steal the bunch for another one of her fur coats, the clever Dalmatians and their friends always find a way to outsmart her. The London tale is a continual favorite, and it’s hard to believe that it has been around for sixty years. Upon the film’s release, Howard Smith of The New York Times quipped, “Even with a lady Lucifer hell-bent for their hides, those Dalmatians are a friendly lot worth knowing.” Fans are also excited to see Cruella, Disney’s forthcoming interpretation with Emma Stone in the title role.
