The Power of the Dog is the latest movie from acclaimed auteur Jane Campion. The unique and dramatic Western is a complex story of characters who share little in common forced to become a dysfunctional family which leads to a lot of tension hanging over the entire story.
The movie unravels in unexpected ways as the characters attempt to manipulate each other and engage in battles of wits and wills. By the time the movie ends, the audience might be surprised which characters proved smarter than others.
7 George Burbank
George is a very reserved character who seems to want harmony amongst the people in his life but doesn’t really know how to achieve that. He is a kind man who seems to genuinely care deeply for Rose and wants to give her a happy life as his wife. However, he also fails to see how unhappy she is once she moves to the ranch and how his brother is the cause of her unhappiness.
Likewise, George is equally clueless when it comes to handling Phil. He knows that his brother is a temperamental and petty man, yet George uses no common sense when relaying news or suggestions to him which inevitably causes Phil to act out in hurtful and somewhat destructive ways.
6 Lola
Thomasin MacKenzie is one of the most promising young actors working in Hollywood today and was most recently seen in an excellent starring role in Last Night in Soho. Given how quickly she is becoming a big name in movies, it is strange to see her pop up in The Power of the Dog in such a small and insignificant role.
Lola is the young maid at the ranch and is mostly just seen cleaning in the background. While Lola is not shown to do anything outwardly foolish, she simply doesn’t stand out as very intelligent either. She is quiet yet friendly and has a childish energy to her that makes her seem younger than she really is.
5 Mrs. Lewis
Another smaller role in the movie is that of Mrs. Lewis. Like Lola, she is someone who operates mostly in the background, serving as the main housekeeper for the ranch. However, she stands out much more than Lola thanks to her strong and commanding personality. In many ways, she seems like a matriarchal figure on the ranch.
She puts people in line while still running the house in a professional and quiet way. Though she gets frustrated at times, she is smart enough to not voice it out loud. But she is also another character whose intelligence doesn’t immediately present itself given her more downplayed role in the story.
4 Rose Gordon
The Power of the Dog is a very intense movie. But while most Westerns earn their tension from shootouts, this tension comes from the relationships in the movie. This can be best seen with the character of Rose who is haunted by her husband’s disapproving brother for the entire movie.
Rose is a strong woman who seems intelligent in her own work and managing of her life as a widow. However, Phil’s mistreatment of Rose and her concerns for her son causes her to act irrationally at times and make questionable decisions. While she attempts to keep her head down, her eventual act against Phil seems like a dangerous and misjudged choice.
3 Governor Edward
Governor Edward is a character who only appears in one scene in the movie but uses that time to establish himself as a fairly effective politician. He is cordial and friendly, always seeming to have the right thing to say even if the situation he finds himself in appears to be heading in an awkward direction.
Edwards is a guest at the ranch where the family dynamics come to a head as Rose battles with her anxiety caused by Phil’s behavior and Phil himself seems determined to spoil the evening. However, Edwards doesn’t let any of the uncomfortable moments rattle him and simply remains friendly while getting out of there as quickly as he possibly could.
2 Phil Burbank
The character of Phil gives Benedict Cumberbatch a role much different from the MCU’s heroic Doctor Strange. Phil is a rough and skilled cowboy who seems to see the land in ways that few other people can. He is incredibly capable in his work which is impressive to see even if he is not an off-putting person in almost every other regard.
But it is not just the landscape that Phil is able to read as he seems to have a talent for reading people as well. When Rose enters his life and ruins things in his mind, it doesn’t take him long to get in her head and start tormenting her in subtle ways that are not readily apparent to everyone else. But in the end, Phil also proves that he is not quite as perceptive of people’s intentions as he likes to think.
1 Peter Gordon
Peter Gordon is the most interesting character in the movie which is not apparent until the very end. He is a quiet and unassuming young man who is sensitive yet brilliant. He is shown to be dedicated to his studies and very little else which makes him an outsider in Phil’s world. However, when he gets Phil to show him some cowboy stuff, he proves to be a quick learner.
While Peter is mainly focused on his education, he also cares deeply for his loving mother and her happiness. In the end, Peter proves that he had been underestimated by those around him, especially Phil. He had his own plan all along and pulled it off brilliantly.
