Thor’s Problem Is That He Wanted To Kill Thanos (Not Save The Universe)

Thor’s quest for revenge prevented him from killing Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. If he wasn’t blinded by rage, the universe could’ve been saved.

Thor’s failure to kill Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War was arguably because the God of Thunder had focused so much on making it his goal. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Asgardian champion spent the entire film in the mood for revenge because of the unspeakable acts Thanos had committed in the opening act, which led to the deaths of Heimdall, Loki, and at least half of the Asgardians. Unfortunately, that right there was Thor’s main issue and it was what ultimately cost half of the universe’s population their lives – or at the very least, five years of them.

Thor sought out the world-conquering Titan in Infinity War and ultimately joined the Avengers in battling the purple beast in Wakanda. The two near-invincible forces ended up squaring off in a brief battle in the film’s final moments that almost saw the MCU hero put a definitive end to his newfound archenemy. However, it wasn’t to be, as the powerful Thanos managed to weather Thor’s emotional storm and succeed in his goal of snapping half of the universe out of existence in a single second – a moment that resulted in the heroes failing their ultimate mission and left moviegoers stunned as the film came to a close.

Thor’s plan to seek revenge was a natural response to watching his loved ones die, but it actually ended up hindering the Avengers’ plan to save the universe. The heroes were, after all, fighting against the Black Order to prevent their leader from uniting the Infinity Stones and using the Gauntlet. As a result, Iron Man, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange attempted to protect the Time Stone in space as they hurtled towards Titan, while another Avengers squad attempted to keep Thanos’ army away from Vision – and, by extension, the Mind Stone. The heroes had put their differences aside and reunited for the greater good because half the universe’s population depended on them. Thor, on the other hand, was missing for the majority of these important missions, each of which would have massively benefitted from his assistance. He was solely focused on getting even and that’s why he decided against joining the Guardians in their quest to locate the villain on Titan, and instead traveled to Nidavellir to craft Stormbreaker – a weapon that he knew would be capable of slaying the beast.

Thor wasn’t primarily concerned with keeping Thanos away from the Mind Stone, he just wanted to kill the big brute. While it does make sense to have The Avengers’ most powerful warrior take on the near-invincible threat, Thor did not go into this battle with a clear head, nor a clear mission like the one his heroic colleagues had. This was evidenced by the fact that he drove Stormbreaker into the Mad Titan’s chest and, instead of finishing the job, dragged his suffering out as he reminded him why he was doing it – which was more than enough time for Thanos to snap his fingers, eradicating billions of souls in the process.

If Thor had refocused himself instead of going into battle blinded by rage – or focused on assisting his comrades in their plans – the Avengers would have stood a much better chance of defeating Thanos and saving the universe. It would have still been an uphill battle but it was one that could have been won – especially when you consider how close they came to doing so. And if cooler heads had prevailed, Thor may have realized that swinging Stormbreaker at Thanos’ gloved hand – or, like the Mad Titan suggested himself, his head – would have prevented all of the heartaches that ensued over the following five years. But Thanos won this battle and, even though the heroes eventually won the war in Avengers: Endgame, it wouldn’t have come to this if Thor hadn’t been so hellbent on revenge in Avengers: Infinity War.
