Titans TV Series Villain Revealed

The Acolyte, a lesser-known DC Comics villain, will be the first “Big Bad” encountered by the heroes in the season premiere of Titans. The reveal also provides hints of what incident will unite the title characters.

As the live-action TV series is finally moving forward, Titans casting updates have been pouring in over the last few weeks, with Teagan Croft as Raven, Brendan Thwaites as Dick Grayson, Alan Ritchson as Hawk and Minka Kelly as Dove all now confirmed. The actor who will play Beast Boy has yet to be announced, however. With early production already underway on Titans, fans can expect numerous developments in the coming weeks as the cast continues to fill out and the show’s plot becomes more clear.

ThatHashtagShow has learned that in the Titans series premiere, the heroes will face the Acolyte, described as male, African-American, confident, and between 40 and 50 years of age. The character will apparently murder Raven’s mother. According to the report, Angela (Raven’s adopted mother) will be killed by the Acolyte in his attempt to kidnap Raven and use her powers for his own gains.

The Acolyte, who debuted in Young Justice #9 in 1999, has had limited appearances in the comic books. The character is supposedly an immortal with the appearance of a devil. However, despite how frightening he may appear, the Acolyte is eventually revealed to be a fraud in the comics. He’s actually a mentally-disturbed human wearing a disguise. In his battles with the superhero group Young Justice, the Acolyte’s plans have included replacing God and resurrecting a Hindu goddess.

The news of the Acolyte’s involvement in the story gives strong indications of what Titans intends for the character of Raven, the daughter of the demon, Trigon. It appears that Raven will have lived a normal life on Earth until the events of the the TV show begin. In the comic books, Angela was Raven’s real mother. Raven and Angela were separated for years until Angela finally began raising her when she was ten years old.

Years later, Angela fled to Earth to gather a group of heroes to defeat Trigon. Her efforts were what led to the formation of the New Teen Titans in 1980. The New Teen Titans (Robin, Cyborg, Beast Boy, Starfire, and Raven) is actually the line-up that most fans are familiar with today. Though the Acolyte’s inclusion in the story is a new twist on the origin of the Teen Titans, it appears that the importance of Raven’s mother will carry over into the live-action TV series.

Titans premieres on DC’s digital service in 2018.
