Diehard Bravo fans have been watching The Real Housewives franchise since its start in 2006. Over the years, fans have seen cities come and go, and the same can be said for its Housewives. Over the years, The Real Housewives has upped its game in the casting department because the storylines are becoming more and more intriguing. But as entertaining as the franchise is, there are definitely problems fans choose to ignore.

As much as viewers adore Bravo, some things need to be changed within The Real Housewives realm for it to continue in a healthy, entertaining way. The Real Housewives of New York is a great example of ignoring some of the glaring problems, only for the series to go down in flames in its 13th season. Fixing these issues could keep The Real Housewives at the top of reality TV fandom.

The Acceptance Of Physical Altercations

Like most reality TV shows, there are times where arguments get heated and a physical altercation can occur. Hairpulling, wine-throwing, and table-flipping have been seen in almost every Real Housewives series. And as shocking as it is to watch for fans, more things can be done to prevent this.

There have been times when production had to step in between the Housewives or their guests, but it’s often too late. As soon as two people are nose to nose, someone from Bravo (or security) should slowly separate those involved. Although these stars sign up for reality TV, no one should be violated for the sake of ratings.

The Show Can Do More To Help Those That Are Suffering

The beauty of reality TV is that its shows those involved how they appear to others. Many Housewives didn’t realize how bad their marriage or situation was until they watched it back on TV. Their emotional moments easily make viewers cry due to how sad their situation is.

Taylor Armstrong’s allegations against her ex-husband, Kenya Moore’s struggle with her mom, and Jules Wainstein’s eating disorder were all serious topics discussed on the show. With such a dark reality, it makes viewers wonder what Bravo is doing to help these Housewives heal and what to do when the network goes too far.

A Series Isn’t ‘Bad’ Without A Groundbreaking Storyline

What makes a series have a good season are the storylines and events throughout. Sometimes nothing incredibly dramatic occurs in a season, but the bond among the women is so tight-knit that it’s still fun to watch. Other times, it’s a few heavy storylines sprinkled throughout that cover the season.

These days, however, it seems like if a series doesn’t have a groundbreaking scandal in the group then the season wasn’t a success. But there doesn’t need to be a huge cheating story or arrest to make the series interesting. The Real Housewives has always been unique purely based on the Housewives’ lifestyles.

Inclusivity & Diversity Can Always Be Better

For any Bravo fan that listens to podcasts about The Real Housewives, the topic of diversity and inclusivity has been a big one. While cities like Potomac and Atlanta do a great job of showcasing the lives of women of color, the other cities in The Real Housewives are primarily White.

Little by little Bravo has been doing a better job of adding more women of color to the casts. Garcelle Beauvais was the first Black woman on the main roster of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Eboni Williams was the first for The Real Housewives of New York, and Crystal Kung-Minkoff was the first Chinese woman on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Now with the addition of The Real Housewives of Dubai, fans are hoping for even more diversity and inclusivity.

Reality-TV With Limits

When the Housewives sign contracts with Bravo, they know their entire lives are subjected to scrutiny. With so many sleuths on the Internet, a Housewife’s past (and the past of those she surrounds herself with) are fair game. But one of the reoccurring problems in the series is that some Housewives are slammed for not opening up about every aspect of their lives, while others are protected.

Lisa Rinna (RHOBH) keeps most of her home life mum, but when Kim Richards mentioned one bad story about Rinna’s husband, all Hell broke loose because she didn’t want it on TV. Meanwhile, there are Housewives like Gizelle Bryant who gets into fights while defending her relationship with her ex. Why are some Housewives protected while others aren’t?

It’s More Scripted Tan Fans Realize

As a reality TV show, there are realistic moments but there are also scripted moments. Whenever the fourth wall is broken on The Real Housewives, viewers learn that there’s always far more to the story than is shown. Producers get involved, phone calls are made, and even waivers are needed for most public eateries the group goes to.

While some planning needs to be done to make the series run smoothly, too much meddling can turn the authentic show into something too similar to a scripted series like The Hills.

It’s Time For New Blood

As iconic as the OGs of The Real Housewives are, most are problematic. There comes a time where every Housewife has run her course and needs a break from the series. After all, filming takes a lot out of the women and it can be quite consuming when in the middle of it all. This is why Housewives must take a break after a long stint on the show (see Dorinda Medley, Nene Leakes, and Heather Dubrow).

When breaks aren’t taken, Housewives like (see Vicki Gunvalson and Ramona Singer) run on low fuel and tend to make diabolical mistakes where their own image is affected. After 5+ years of being on the show, Bravo should bring new blood to the show for a breath of fresh air.

Let’s Focus On Housewives Over 40

Adjacent to the topic of diversity and inclusivity, one of the most important parts of The Real Housewives is that the women shown are mainly over 40 years old. In a world that fawns over youth, women over 40 don’t get the same chances for TV roles that they should.

The Real Housewives proves that women over 40 can be as fun, sexy, and brilliant as those in their 20’s and 30’s. In fact, the most beloved Housewives are those that are in their 40’s and 50’s. RHONY proved that bringing in a younger cast member only complicated the dynamic.

A Single Storyline Throughout The Series Can Make A Boring Season

Sometimes when a season is lacking drama, the cast will focus on one particular thing that they can’t get over. In RHOBH’s season 9’s case, this storyline focused on Dorit Kemsley, Lisa Vanderpump, and a rescued dog.

The storyline wasn’t all that interesting, but it followed the women throughout the entire season. It was something they all bickered about and couldn’t get over, but that didn’t mean it was a good season. Sometimes, a single storyline for over 20 episodes is dull and not as enthralling as it would have been with multiple storylines going on.

No More Glam Squads

Every Housewife wants to look good for the cameras, but these days they take it too far. Glam squads used to be saved for reunions and confessionals, but now glam squads are flying with the women on vacations and traveling with them before cast dinners.

Considering the series is based on “real” women as they go about life, getting completely made up just because a camera is around takes away from the reality aspect of the series. If average women aren’t traveling around with glam, new Housewives shouldn’t either.
