FromSoftware’s Dark Souls games are known for their high level of difficulty and unforgiving nature. Though not a Souls game in title, Bloodborne continues this legacy, loading its gameplay with hordes of enemies, brutal boss encounters, and intricate combat. While the majority of its difficult elements are considered standard for a Soulslike, there is one element of Bloodborne’s gameplay that many have decried as unnecessarily frustrating: Bloodborne does not allow players to fast travel.

In place of a standard fast travel mechanic, Bloodborne opts instead for vast, interconnected environments with a variety of hidden shortcuts. The game also features lamps that serve as both checkpoints and portals to the game’s sanctuary realm, the Hunter’s Dream. Though players can use these lamps to warp to the Hunter’s Dream and, from there, to their location of choice, Bloodborne does not allow fast travel without a stopover in the Dream.

The Hunter’s Dream is a sanctuary within Bloodborne – the only area in the game free from enemies and environmental threats. Within the Dream, players can level up their stats, improve their weapons, and purchase consumables and gear. All of these features require a form of payment: Blood Echoes. Blood Echoes are Bloodborne’s equivalent to Souls in Dark Souls. Echoes are collected from fallen enemies and serve a dual purpose as both the game’s experience points and currency. And just like Souls, Blood Echoes can easily be lost.

As in Dark Souls, Bloodborne players lose all of their accumulated Blood Echoes upon death. Once the player resurrects at the last checkpoint, they have one chance to recover their lost Echoes from the spot where they died or from the enemy that killed them – a brutal mechanic that only becomes more grueling as the bosses and enemies get tougher. If the player dies again before recovering their lost Echoes, the Echoes are gone forever, and the player must begin collecting them again from scratch.

Bloodborne’s Hidden Message for Players

As Bloodborne progresses, upgrades and consumables increase in cost, forcing many players to do a bit of grinding and farm for Blood Echoes in order to level up. This is where fast travel would come in handy: Many players wish to be able to warp between the game’s best farming locations without a stopover in the Dream, racking up as many Blood Echoes as possible in a single run. But by forcing players to stop off in the Hunter’s Dream first, Bloodborne offers players a subtle tip – spend your Blood Echoes.

As players rack up larger amounts of Echoes by defeating more difficult bosses and enemies later in the game, the inevitable loss of those Echoes upon player death becomes all the more painful. By forcing players to stop off in the Hunter’s Dream between fast travel locations, Bloodborne encourages players to spend their Blood Echoes before travelling to the next place. Rather than warping between locations and racking up enormous amounts of Echoes, players who spend their Echoes incrementally in the Hunter’s Dream save themselves a load of heartache by preventing the loss of huge numbers of Echoes, just as the game intended.

Though it can be frustrating at times, Bloodborne’s lack of fast travel is actually one of its most forgiving mechanics. By encouraging the player to spend their Blood Echoes between locations, Bloodborne better sets its players up for success – but, in true FromSoftware fashion, only if they are willing to read between the lines.
