The CW’s The Secret Circle had all the right ingredients for another supernatural teen drama, but it was still ended just as things were improving.

Young adult fiction writer, L.J. Smith skyrocketed into bigger fame when her hit novels The Vampire Diaries was developed into a series. The television show defined an era in the 2000s when vampires, werewolves, and witches were mainstream. The CW decided to turn another one of her popular book series into a show hoping to hit another goldmine.

The Secret Circle debuted on television in 2011 and only aired for one season. While the show’s ratings weren’t high, it still developed a huge fanbase. A young girl learns the truth about her ancestry, her new witch friends, and the real reason behind her mother’s death. The show had its glory moments but sometimes fell short due to writing and clichés.

10 Worst: Some Lacking Character Development

A lot goes on in the group of witches from the start. But analyzing it all, it lacked some development within certain characters. It’s not surprising that the main character, Cassie (Britt Robertson), got the most story changes. She went from being an average teen to a powerful witch with dark power.

But the other characters were lackluster. The biggest shift for Diana (Shelley Hennig) was that she broke up with her boyfriend and learned she was Cassie’s half-sister, and Faye (Phoebe Tonkin) was the resident bad girl with small moments of self-awareness before reverting to her brooding self. The male witches weren’t very well-developed, either.

9 Best: It’s An L.J. Smith Adaptation

To be fair, the show built up its own hype mainly because it was based on L.J. Smith’s other hit book series. The show followed a similar storyline with some minor tweaks and less intense drama. Cassie moves back to her mother’s hometown and learns she’s a full-blooded witch.

Unlike the books, the show cut down the number of witches in the “circle” from the original eleven. The book also details them unleashing a “dark force.” Fans of the writer were hopeful in seeing another series come to life on the small screen.

8 Worst: The Tropes Are Seen A Mile Away

Sadly, the show does follow many common tropes seen in the teen genre. While fans may still be surprised and gasp at the newfound reality that occurs in the story, it’s not that unconventional.

The female lead falls in love with the main male lead; there’s tension between lovers; the backstabbing of someone in the group everyone thought was on their side. Not to mention, the main character not being so innocent and actually harnessing an immense and dark power. There’s also the shocking revelation of the half-sibling that was there all along.

7 Best: Seeped In Supernatural Teen Drama

While the tropes aren’t surprising, fans can’t help but agree that the elements of a supernatural teen drama are a guilty pleasure. This mostly came from the immense media and pop culture success of the Twilight movie saga. It opened the door for the genre to really flourish and develop a worldwide fanbase.

The show had everything fans wanted. The drama and suspense of learning to harness their immense witch powers, the dark and alluding threat of outside enemies like hunters, and the palpable romance and sexual frustration between characters. All of it contained within a small fictional town.

6 Worst: The Male Lead

Adam (Thomas Dekker) wasn’t necessarily the worst male lead. The worst is a bit harsh but fans swayed either way in falling for him or not. He did convince fans with his sultry and smooth way of speaking and an undeniable boyish charm.

But fans were just coming off an immense high with The Vampire Diaries, swooning over Damon and Stefan. Adam was the “safer” option in comparison to the Salvatore brothers, and fans who expected the same idea in The Secret Circle didn’t necessarily get it.

5 Best: Built Up Expectations

One noteworthy thing about the show was that it did a good job of building up the audience’s expectations. The show had a lot of promise from the get-go. It had the same allure and style that fans adored from its sister show. In only 22 episodes, fans got hooked. And why is that?

The female lead isn’t a pushover in any way. She learns of her witch nature and initially refuses to submit to the circle’s wish of using her to complete it. There’s also the hot and cold tension between the group which adds flavor. It also seemed that the circle had a bigger issue to face with every episode that led to the grand finale with a cliffhanger.

4 Worst: The Unanswered Questions

Sadly, the show didn’t get renewed for a second season due to the poor ratings despite its popularity with fans. Fans were outraged and even petitioned for it to stay on the air. Many felt that the show was left with too many open doors and unanswered questions.

Cassie is seen using her dark magic and enjoying it, Adam is given the crystal skull and seems to be entranced by its dark power, Diana leaves town with the Balcoin mark on her hand, Jake (Chris Zylka) is sent a package with a mysterious object and a note from his grandfather warning him things are going to get worse. To top it off, a group of witches with the Balcoin symbol on their palms are watching over the town.

3 Best: The Tension Between Characters

The tension between the characters made for a good storyline. The circle isn’t all buddy-buddy with one another all the time; they constantly clash heads about what needs to be done with their magic. Faye is the resident bad girl and on many occasions goes against them for her own needs, thus resulting in consequences.

There’s Diana who’s dead set on completing the circle even if it means losing their individual powers. Then there’s Adam who’s dating Diana but is attracted to Cassie. There’s the secret threat of Jake who’s a witch but also works with hunters. Not to mention the main characters’ parents who have their own agenda and secrets.

2 Worst: Some Characters Are Annoying

Not all characters in the show will be fan favorites 100% of the time; this is expected. Much like how fans of TVD found Caroline’s controlling demeanor a bit tiresome or Bonnie’s self-sacrificing a bit too much at times. The same can be said for The Secret Circle, and some characters might just rub fans the wrong way.

Like Diana’s persistent need to try and get Cassie to complete the circle. This includes Diana hounding her when Cassie just lost her mother, moved to a new town, and learned she’s a powerful witch. Or Adam who can’t make up his mind about who to date.

1 Best: The Love Triangles

What’s a teen show without a love triangle? It’s the best way to engage fans and have them at the edge of their seats. The show has two main love triangles that all center around Cassie. There’s Diana who’s dating Adam in the beginning, but Adam and Cassie have an undeniable attraction for each other due to a family curse.

When Jake rolls into town, he too starts to fall for Cassie and she feels similarly. Adam struggles between his long love for Diana and his newfound attraction to Cassie, all while Cassie tries to resist Adam and keep her emotions at bay with Jake. There’s also Faye hooking up with Jake and developing their own relationship.
