Wheel Of Time Episode 5 Proves The Book Changes Are The Right Choice

In The Wheel Of Time episode 5, the Prime Video show makes many changes to the plot of the first book, The Eye of the World, and it proves that the book changes are the right choice for the series. From the beginning of the series, much has been changed from the books – Wheel of Time has changed the ages of the main characters while diverging from the main plot of Robert Jordan’s first book to introduce more Aes Sedai, including key figures like Liandrin Sedai, and the Children of the Light, a quasi-religious militaristic force that hates the magic-wielding women in the world of the show.

For the most part, these changes have been welcomed. Wheel of Time is based on a massive 14 book series written by Jordan and Brandon Sanderson and it was clear from the onset that the show would have to make some changes to make the streaming show easily digestible as an 8-episode season. Still, there has been pushback against some of the changes, including from those who believe that Wheel of Time is rushing through the plot, something that could hinder the characterization of the core group of characters and potentially even end up making the show lose some of its magic.

Wheel of Time episode 5 should put those fears to rest. After the Emond’s Field Five was split up at the end of episode 2, a large expanse of the book lay in front of the season – Rand, Mat, Perrin, Egwene, and Nynaeve spend much of the middle chunk of the novel looking for each other, visiting various cities and facing challenges before eventually reuniting. The show excises this and instead has them all converge upon Tar Valon, the home of the Aes Sedai and the Amyrlin Seat. Bringing the Emond’s Field Five back together – which looks primed to happen in episode 6 – is the smartest choice the series could make.

While the singular journies of each character are important to the foundation of Wheel of Time, seeing them together will truly be able to highlight the ways in which they are each struggling with the quest they find themselves on. As they barrel towards a confrontation with the Dark One and finding out the true identity of the Dragon Reborn, the Emond’s Field Five will need to be together to face him and instead of The Wheel of Time treading water by prolonging their journey, it has smartly brought them to a place where they will be tested even further.

With three episodes to go until The Wheel of Time season 1’s finale, the show has found its footing nicely and this bodes well for season 2. The Great Hunt, the second book in The Wheel of Time saga, is arguably even more massive and if the Prime Video show adapts it as deftly as it has The Eye of the World, then the series could be around for some time. No book-to-screen adaptation is perfect and some will take umbrage with The Wheel of Time’s book changes no matter what, but episode 5 shows that the series knows how to confidently move forward when necessary for the sake of the plot and the audience at home.
