The Show That Inspired Euphoria Has a Tragic Ending

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Euphoria Season 2, Episode 4, “You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can,” now available on HBO.

Since its release in 2019, Euphoria has been a huge success with audiences around the globe. The show has been praised for dealing with difficult subjects like abusive relationships, trauma and drug addiction in a high school setting and sheds a light on the reality of adolescence instead of romanticizing it. With incredible actresses like Zendaya and Hunter Schafer in the lead roles and an amazing soundtrack by Labrinth, it’s no surprise that the show became a huge hit with younger audiences. However, what many fans of the show may not know is that HBO’s Euphoria is actually based on an Israeli show of the same name.

The original Euphoria show was a ten-episode mini-series that aired in 2012 on an Israeli television channel called Hot 3. The plot of the original Euphoria series is very similar to the HBO remake’s — it focuses on a group of teenagers who live recklessly without any adult supervision. There are also a few major plot twists that happen in the Israeli show which haven’t happened yet in HBO’s Euphoria. These could be some good indications to how the series is going to go over the next few seasons.

In the original series, Hofit — the character who inspired the creation of Rue in the American show — starts using drugs because she feels responsible for a sixteen-year-old boy’s death. Deker, who inspired Fezco, is not a drug dealer in the original series, just a teenager who’s interested in experimenting with psychedelics. Tomer, who inspired Ashtray, murders Hofit’s ex-boyfriend as revenge for years of bullying. These differences in the characters seem to imply that the plot twists in HBO’s Euphoria won’t line up exactly with those in the original series.

However, there is one major plot twist at the end of the Israeli Euphoria series that could potentially happen in HBO’s Euphoria. At the end of the original series, it is revealed that Hofit died from a drug overdose and is narrating the events of the show from beyond the grave. This could serve as a warning for Rue potentially dying in the final season of HBO’s Euphoria. Considering that all of the show seems to have been told in the past tense and mostly from Rue’s perspective so far, this isn’t a ridiculous outcome to consider.

Of course, director Sam Levinson’s comments on his visions for HBO’s Euphoria seem to suggest otherwise. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he stated, “I just wrote myself as a teenager. […] I just write myself and what I was feeling and what I was going through when I was younger and I was dealing with addiction.” He also said, “I was a drug addict for many years and I’ve been clean for many years now.” This could suggest that Levinson wants a happy ending for Rue to reflect his own experiences with drug addiction.

While the true ending of HBO’s Euphoria is unclear for now, Hofit’s death in the original Euphoria series definitely doesn’t bode well for Rue. Especially after Rue’s overdose in Season 1 and her hallucination in Season 2, Episode 4, “You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can,” it is definitely easy to imagine her dying as a result of drug use. Rue’s story so far has been a tragic one, and this seems to line up perfectly with Hofit’s journey in the original Israeli Euphoria miniseries.

Euphoria airs Sundays on HBO at 9 p.m. EST and streams on HBO Max the same day.
