Whether it’s movies or TV shows, parodying other forms of entertainment has always been The Simpsons’ bread and butter. Even most of the show’s episode titles are references to movies.

And it’s no different when it comes to video games, as the series has always been clever about mocking some of the most popular game titles of the time. The writers of the show are clearly big fans of Mortal Kombat, and Grand Theft Auto is seemingly everpresent in The Simpsons’ consciousness.

10 Dingo Dash / Crash Bandicoot

Some Redditors think Crash Bandicoot is overrated, but not Lisa Simpson. Lisa isn’t one to slack when it comes to homework, but in “Lisa Gets An ‘A’,” instead of reading The Wind in the Willows, she puts on one of Bart’s video games, Dingo Dash. The game is clearly parodying Crash Bandicoot, but the reference is made with love more than anything, and it has so much attention to detail.

Just like Crash, Dingo runs through jungles and temple ruins, and he even has the same little jiggle when standing still. Later on, when the game is on pause in the background, Dingo can be seen on a kart in a level similar to Crash Team Racing too.

9 Death Kill City II: Death Kill Stories / Grand Theft Auto

There are so many connections between Rockstar’s celebrated Grand Theft Auto series and The Simpsons, with the most recent being the revelation that the GTA V map looks like Homer’s face. But out of all the references to the violent and controversial video game, one of the first arrived in the form of a parody in “Yokel Chords.”

When Bart’s pranks get too out of hand, he’s sent to a therapist against his will, but lucky for him, the therapist has him play Death Kill City II so that she can analyze him. The cover of the game box has a hilariously similar layout to Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and not even ESRB Ratings is safe from parody, as the game is rated “Bad for Everyone.”

8 Assassin’s Creed: Summer Of Love / Assassin’s Creed

With The Simpsons often parodying huge events like Comic-Con, it wasn’t going to be long until the popular video game convention E3 was in the show’s crosshairs. The family visit E4 in “The Food Wife,” and they see another Assassin’s Creed game is bring promoted, clearly making fun of the annual basis on which the games are churned out.

As the series likes to jump between time periods and take advantage of specific moments in history, the parody does the same thing. The sequel is titled Assassin’s Creed: Summer of Love and the main character is a bandana-wearing hippie who wields a guitar instead of a sword.

7 Earthland Realms / World Of Warcraft

Although Marge hates violence in media and entertainment and is extremely critical when it comes to video games, she fell hard for Earthland Realms in “Marge Gamer.” Not only that, but she became obsessed with killing every other player in the game and was willing to pay $14.95 per month for the privilege.

Earthland Realms is an obvious parody of World of Warcraft, as it was full of knights and every character in Springfield had the game and built their own avatar. However, while the episode is funny, it’s only the second-best episode of animated sitcom parodying World of Warcraft, and South Park’s “Make Love, Not Warcraft” pulls it off so much better.

6 Grand Theft Walrus / Grand Theft Auto

With the yellow characters being around for over 30 years at this point, there has been so much merchandise released and loads of Simpsons video games fans didn’t know existed. But this is one Simpsons game that fans wish was real.

In continuing the show’s obsession with the GTA series, The Simpsons Movie briefly includes a brand new game on the market, Grand Theft Walrus. The game is essentially the same as the popular series, as it sees players stealing cars and terrorizing the city. The only difference is that the playable character is a walrus and all of the NPCs are penguins.

5 Guts Of War / God Of War

There were a lot of gems and Easter eggs in “The Food Wife” when the family visit the E4 convention, as not only is Assassin’s Creed parodied, but so many other games too. Fans can spot signs for games such as World of KrustCraft and Shaun White: Time Snowboarding, but one that stands out is Guts of War II.

Bart looks at the God of War-parody display in amazement, as there’s a Simpsons-ized Kratos using intestines as weapons. The animators can only be applauded, as they did a great job of accurately depicting the early games. But what makes the game even funnier is its subtitle, Entrails of Intestinox.

4 Touch Of Death / Mortal Kombat

The newly released Mortal Kombat was a huge success for the studio, and that has led to a ton of possible Mortal Kombat spin-off movies that Warner Bros. could develop. But the movie is an adaptation of one of the most popular fighting game franchises around, and The Simpsons has jumped at every possible chance to parody it.

In “Bart The Mother,” the prankster can be seen playing the Touch of Death in a gaming arcade. The fictional game even featured its own fatalities, which is what Mortal Kombat is known for, as a ghost rises out of one of the characters when he gets knocked out.

3 Larry The Looter / Mario

Before Grand Theft Auto existed, The Simpsons was still able to make statements about violent video games without using the Rockstar series as an example. In “Radio Bart,” Bart plays a violent side-scrolling game called Larry the Looter.

The game is a parody of so many side-scrolling beat ’em-ups at the time, but most noticeably, there was a parody of Super Mario thrown into the game for good measure too. It’s unlike he’s ever been seen before, as the character is wielding a shotgun and is an enemy of the playable character.

2 Bonestorm / Mortal Kombat

Just like Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat is a video game that the show loves to reference and parody time and again. It might have been funny when the game was parodied for Touch of Death, but “Marge Not Be Proud” takes it to a whole other detailed level.

As the video game series is known for its outrageous characters, the fictional game, Bonestorm, features a hipster Santa with a bazooka who has the catchphrase, “Shove ‘this’ up your stocking!” There are also six-armed monsters in the game, which is a direct reference to Goro, a fan favorite in the Mortal Kombat series.

1 Fruit Shoot / Fruit Ninja

Again being a social commentary on violence in video games, The Simpsons takes the harmless iOS game Fruit Ninja and turns it into Fruit Shoot.

Fruit Ninja was one of the first apps to take advantage of what smartphones were capable of, but in “The Book Job,” it’s reverted back to a classic arcade game. The original game sees players having to slice through various fruits with a machete, whereas the fictional game sees Bart shooting the fruit with a handgun in an arcade.
