The Simpsons 10 Darkest Treehouse of Horror Episodes Ever

No matter what any generation of fan thinks of any era of The Simpsons nowadays, most fans looks forward to Halloween night, or close to it. The annual “Treehouse Of Horror” anthology episode has been a highlight of every season since the second one. It allows the creators to completely deviate from their usual formula and go completely ridiculous, riffing on all kinds of popular science fiction, fantasy, and horror shows and books.

Since they’ve planned everything they’ve ever done since the start of the series, this year’s installment, the thirtieth installment is also the 666th episode of the longest running series of all time. So, if we’re all still alive the night after 666, we might have some more episodes to add to this list – 10 Darkest Treehouse of Horror Episodes, Ever.

10 Nightmare Cafeteria

The fifth installment of the series is also overall one of the best. The concluding chapter this night, “Nightmare Cafeteria” is one of the reasons why. A riff of the twisted film, Soylent Green, the teachers of Springfield Elementary have a found a way to discipline the children and have good food to eat; which happens to be the children. As Bart is about to be consumed, he awakes from his nightmare to a new one. Noxious fumes that turn your skin inside out. The family decides to accept their fate and sing “One” from A Chorus Line.

9 Wanted: Dead, Then Alive

Sideshow Bob has been a thorn in Bart’s side for years now (or is that the other way around?) in the segment, “Wanted: Dead, Then Alive,” Bob finally succeeds in his lifelong goal. With Bart finally gone, Bob tries to fulfill other life dreams. But killing Bart is what made him truly happy. He then builds a machine to bring the boy back to life, only so he can kill him again.

8 The Others

The show takes on the critically acclaimed horror movie, The Others in this story. The Simpsons are being haunted by their past selves from The Tracey Ullman Show. Marge kills herself to become a ghost to make Homer choose between her and the original Marge that he’s become infatuated with. Meanwhile Lisa inadvertently dies chasing Bart, so her ghost chokes Bart in retaliation. Even more gruesome and gratuitous, Willie killed Maggie and is making Simpsons corpse stew.

7 Nightmare On Evergreen Terrace

During a “Treehouse Of Horror” episode anything can happen and any IP is up for parody. In the early days of the show, the world was still terrified of Freddy Kruger. But in Springfield, the children are terrified of Groundskeeper Willie. In “Nightmare On Evergreen Terrace,” it’s revealed that he’s attacking kids in their sleep due to dying in a fire. After murdering Martin while he was dreaming he was Calliope, Willie turns his attentions to the Simpsons children, as a giant spider made out of bagpipes.

6 Dial M For Murder, Press # To Return To The Main Menu

The master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock has been skewered by the residents of Springfield before, but “Dial M For Murder, Press # To Return To The Main Menu,” is an entire segment dedicated to Hitch. After getting jilted by her teacher, Bart suggests to Lisa that they kill each other’s teachers, ala Strangers On A Train. When she refuses, Bart comes after her. Lisa gets the upper hand but doesn’t give into temptation, but accidentally kills Bart anyway.

5 There’s No Business, Like Moe Business

The Simpsons 10 Darkest Treehouse of Horror Episodes Ever

Sweeney Todd has long been a beloved dark musical. Which means it’s rife for getting Simpsonized. Moe is jealous of Homer and Marge’s love, so he neglects to tell her that Homer’s fallen into a shaft at the tavern and got impaled on his microbrew pipes. The town falls in love with Homer’s blood-tainted beer. Moe nearly woos Marge until Homer makes his grand return. What musical parody would be complete without a musical number? The entire cast rejoices in celebration of the 20th “Treehouse Of Horror” to conclude the episode.

4 Easy Bake Coven

The citizens of Springfield are usually quick to judge and turn into an angry, pitchfork wielding mob. But in “Easy Bake Coven,” they were right in their fear of Marge. In this retelling of “The Crucible,” it turns out Marge really is a witch.

After turning Chief Wiggum into a gofer and unleashing a colony of bats onto her accusers, she flees to Patty and Selma’s witch cave where the Coven conspire to travel to the town and eat all of the children.

3 Bad Dream House

The Simpsons 10 Darkest Treehouse of Horror Episodes Ever

It would feel wrong to not pay homage to the very first Treehouse segment. In “Bad Dream House,” the show was finding its footing on how to pull off these Halloween episodes that would become a staple of the series. The family moves into a house that’s possessed. The walls bleed, the kitchen has a portal to another dimension in it, but most disturbing – the kids enjoy parading around at night with knives. But despite demanding they leave and threatening the family, Marge gets fed up and tells the house to just deal with the Simpsons living there. Instead, the haunted house implodes on itself than face existence with the family.

2 The Shinning

If for some reason, you haven’t seen this one, every time someone you know says “The Shinning, you want to get to sued;” they’re referencing this episode.

“The Shinning” is actually a pretty pitch-perfect Simpsonized version of the Stephen King / Stanley Kubrick horror classic, The Shining. Will Homer kill the family? You’ll just have to do what Marge tells Lisa – “we’ll just have to wait and see.”

1 Mmm…Homer

Legitimately, this episode is not for the squeamish. After accidentally chopping his finger off, Homer’s digit lands on the grill. Once he realizes how good he tastes, Homer keeps finding new and exciting ways to cook himself, up to and including using a cheese grater on his head and digging a corkscrew into his ear to get some pastry icing. Marge can’t stand to see Homer eat himself (and what wife would?), so she leaves him.
