Will FF7 Remake Part 2 Have Chocobo Racing

Now that Final Fantasy 7 Remake has been out for nearly six months, fans are eagerly turning their attention to the game’s sequel, presumably titled Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2. While developer Square Enix has yet to release any info on where Cloud and friends will go next, the FF7 Remake sequel will likely follow the same steps as the original. Now that the band of heroes is leaving Midgar, the game should open up quite drastically and FF7 Remake Part 2 may even be open-world. If this happens, it means visiting locations like the Gold Saucer will most likely be available in Part 2, and that also could possibly re-introduce the most famous of the original FF7’s mini-games: chocobo racing.

Chocobo racing in the original Final Fantasy 7 was an elaborate mini-game that involved not only racing the feathery friends but also breeding them. It was a time-consuming and arduous endeavor, and fans still can’t wholeheartedly agree if it was great or horrible. The whole process involved lures, cross-breeding, and terribly repetitive races in the Gold Saucer. Players didn’t necessarily race for fun, though, since racing and breeding a gold chocobo was necessary for obtaining the Knights of the Round Materia and other great items. It was a grinding experience that feels especially outdated now. Square Enix will most certainly have to make some changes if they implement chocobo racing into FF7 Remake Part 2.

Thanks to a bearded cowboy named Chocobo Sam, players of FF7 Remake have already been introduced to chocobos and the finer points of riding on one. Chocobos are iconic figures in Final Fantasy games, and riding atop a chocobo will likely be the primary means of travel in FF7 Remake Part 2, especially now that Cloud and company are out of Midgar and moving into the wider world. But will chocobo racing play a major part in the game?

What Chocobo Racing Could Look Like in FF7 Remake Part 2

From a story perspective, it’s highly likely Cloud will make it to the Gold Saucer in FF7 Remake Part 2. This is where chocobo racing was introduced in the original game, and the remake could follow suit. The original’s chocobo racing has been remembered less-than-fondly and hasn’t aged especially well, but it’s still a famous part of the game. Square Enix probably won’t cut chocobo racing out entirely, but the mini-game will definitely get an overhaul with some modern updates.

The most likely route for Square Enix is to make chocobo racing in FF7 Remake Part 2 resemble the chocobo racing in Final Fantasy XV, the most recent mainline title. While Final Fantasy XV’s mini-game still got plenty of complaints, it was a much more streamlined and player-friendly version that removed the chocobo breeding aspect entirely. In FF7 Remake Part 2, it’s also doubtful Square will feature chocobo breeding and the time-consuming mechanics that went along with it. Instead, they’ll probably scrap the breeding aspect altogether and focus solely on a racing mini-game where wins equal rewards.

Since the world is probably going to be expanded greatly, chocobo racing wouldn’t necessarily have to be limited to the Gold Saucer, either. Chocobo racing similar to the kind found in Final Fantasy X could also work well, as players speed through open areas in time trials or collection missions. This might even be the best option, since it would take away the frustrations of being on a narrow track with limited mobility.

As Final Fantasy Remake Part 2 nears, Square Enix will likely share more details about what to expect in the game. Until then, fans will have to wait and see if chocobo racing (and Chocobo Sam) reappear in the follow-up.
