The Simpsons 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Krusty The Clown

One of the most recognizable faces in The Simpsons is that of Krusty The Clown. The green-haired, red-nosed clown is one of the most important elements in the lives of Bart and Lisa and a source of humor around Springfield. Of course, he is a little more complex than his on-stage persona and is shown to be rather depressed in his day-to-day life.

With his many appearances in the show, it’s pretty likely you might have forgotten some elements of Krusty’s life; we’ve listed ten things to make things a little easier.

10 He Has A Traditional Jewish Background

Both of Krusty’s parents were Jewish, and they all lived together in a Jewish community, with his father acting as a Rabbi.

He doesn’t exactly seem proud of his heritage though (possibly because his father was so disapproving of his career) and makes sure Judaism isn’t mentioned during his shows and makes sure that as few people as possible refer to him by his birth name: Herschel Shmoikel Pinchas Yerucham Krustofsky.

9 He Was Once Known As Rory B. Bellows

There have been a lot of times that Krusty has got himself involved in some very shady dealings, with one particular encounter with the IRS leading to the need to fake his own death.

When he did so, he abandoned all suggestions of his former life as a clown, and all of his Jewish heritage and attempted to live a life salvaging ships which had sunk in the sea, under the name Rory B. Bellows.

8 Luke Perry Is His Half-Brother

Through his mother Rachel, Krusty has a particularly interesting family life. Luke Perry (who appeared in the likes of Beverly Hills, 90201 and Riverdale before his death in 2019) was his half-brother.

As such, he was able to get Perry to appear on his show multiple times, acting as a Side-show at the Krusty Comeback Special, supposedly dying when the pillow factory he landed in blew up.

7 And He Has Many Children

We know that Krusty has a lot of children, though we really don’t know much about them, he doesn’t seem to know anything about them, and they don’t seem to desire his presence in their lives.

However, his daughter (from a one-night stand) Sophie was the only one who found her father and sought out a relationship. Krusty wasn’t the best dad in the world, and we don’t see a lot of Sophie afterward.

6 From Fifteen Different Marriages

Speaking of many children, Krusty has also had many lovers over the years. Even though we’ve only ever seen him use Bob, Mel, and Luke Perry as sideshows (who we’re pretty sure he hasn’t married) it has been strongly implied that kept marrying his sideshows.

The fact that he had so many wives, yet we’ve seen him in various non-marital relationships and know about a lot of his one-night stands suggests that Krusty was a busy man.

5 He Lives In A Fancy Area Of Springfield

Krusty is a rich and successful TV clown, and his show is the most-watched thing on TV amongst children in the town. As such, he has acquired an impressive amount of money over his career.

He lives in Springfield Heights, an area of the town known to house the most wealthy: Kent Brockman, Fat Tony, Troy McClure, and of course, Krusty himself.

4 He Learnt To Read Over The Course Of The Show

One of the first appearances of Krusty (and the first appearance of Sideshow Bob) came in the episode ‘Krusty Gets Busted’. In that episode, it is demonstrated that he doesn’t know how to read.

In a rare piece of commitment to continuity from the writers of The Simpsons, ‘Like Father, Like Clown’ shows him learning to read, and the events of ‘I Love Lisa’ suggest that he has reached his goal.

3 And Has Multiple Health Issues

Over the course of the show, we are introduced to a multitude of health issues that Krusty has to live with.

Not only is he overweight and one of the only characters in the show to be shown as a heavy smoker, but he also has a pacemaker fitted and a condition in which he can start laughing at random times.

2 Many Of Which Could Be Caused By His Products

Krusty isn’t exactly a fan of legitimate business. Many of his products are incredibly dangerous, from his basically poisonous Krusty Burger, to his home pregnancy test, which (somehow) can cause birth defects.

He also has a brand of bubble gum that has spider eggs in it, a cereal with pieces of metal in it, and his own brand of sulfuric acid.

1 He Was Originally Supposed To Be Homer

Outside of the fictional world of the show, Krusty also has an interesting history. You might have realized that Krusty and Homer look weirdly similar, and you’d be right: originally, it was supposed to be revealed that Krusty was Homer.

It would have been a great twist, but they decided to keep them as two separate characters.
