The Simpsons 10 Worst Things Grandpa Simpson Ever Did To Homer

It’s safe to say that The Simpsons’ titular family is more than a little dysfunctional. Bart torments his parents, his sisters and… just about everybody in Springfield on a daily basis. Homer isn’t much better either. In particular, the father-son relationship the unpredictable pair share is fraught with strife.

Much of that, as we’re about to see, stems from Grandpa Simpson’s own struggles with fatherhood. Here are some of the worst things he ever said or did to Homer, from keeping shocking secrets to threatening his son and his family with a shotgun!

10 He Told Homer He Didn’t Want Him

It’s well-established that Homer and Abe see precious little of each other. Homer consigned his sometimes troublesome father to the Springfield Retirement Castle and visits him as rarely as possible, and Abe harbors a fair amount of resentment for this.

As a result, their few attempts at working together have usually been doomed to failure. In “Grandpa vs. Sexual Inadequacy,” Abe convinces his son to collaborate in an attempt to sell Simpson and Son Revitalizing Tonic, an aphrodisiac the old man rediscovered from his past. In an argument while on the road, Grandpa angrily snaps that Homer was an accident and would never have been conceived without the tonic. Furious, Homer abandons his father, reconciling only after the pair burn down the old family home (in separate, simultaneous accidents).

9 He Ruined Homer’s Budding Gymnastic Career

Of course, Homer’s ridiculous slapstick moments are some of the funniest things in the show. Over the show’s long, long run, he’s fallen over, through and into more things than we can count, always with his hilarious trademark screams and a D’oh! or two.

Surprisingly, though, he had incredible grace, poise and athleticism as a student. In the Season 9 episode “Bart Star,” a flashback shows Homer at Springfield High School, performing a gymnastics routine. At a critical moment, a watching Abe sneers “you’re going to blow it,” causing Homer to fumble and fall to the ground in a heap. “That’s what I get for having faith in you,” he states, crushing Homer’s confidence and potentially changing the course of his whole life.

8 He Didn’t Tell Homer The Truth About His Mother

While the Simpson family often finds itself on the wrong side of the hapless Chief Wiggum (who’s just as hilarious as his son), Homer’s mother Mona has had the most trouble of all with the law. It’s revealed in Season 7’s “Mother Simpson” that Homer has long thought Mona dead, leaving him utterly gobsmacked when she returns and seeks refuge in the Simpsons’ home.

The reason for all this emotional turmoil? Grandpa had told Homer that Mona was dead, withholding the truth (she was wanted for an attack on a laboratory of Mr. Burns’ when Homer was a child). He’s thrilled to see his mother again, but devastated that his father had kept the shocking truth from him.

7 He Crushed Homer’s Dreams And Ambitions (Several Times)

Throughout their squabbling during the Simpson and Son Revitalizing Tonic incident, Abe makes it clear that he thinks Homer is just a screw-up in everything he tries to do. While it’s true that Homer has certainly tried a lot of different careers in his time, Abe never really encouraged him in any meaningful way.

As we saw with the gymnastics routine, he’s often done quite the opposite. While the pair are at the old family home, another glimpse into the past shows Homer as a young boy. He impersonates President Kennedy in front of his parents and Mona wonders aloud whether Homer will be president one day. Abe turns to his son and scoffs, “we’ve got a whole system set up to keep people like you from ever becoming president. Quit your daydreaming, melon head!” Homer’s crestfallen expression speaks for itself, reflected on his adult face as the flashback ends.

6 He Didn’t Tell Homer About His Half-Brother

As long-time fans will know, the Simpson family has a lot of skeletons in its closet. Mona’s scandal was more than enough for Homer to be getting on with, but before that, he discovered another detail his father had been keeping from him: he has a half-brother.

Herb Powell first appears in Season 2, in “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” In the aftermath of a heart attack, Abe finally confesses that Homer has a half-brother, Herb. Fans will know that Homer eventually tracks Herb to Detroit, where he ruins the poor man’s once-successful car company. Had the half-brothers known of each other, though, Homer’s fortunes may have been drastically different. Abe did him another disservice here.

5 He Tried To Kill The Family In The Simpsons Movie

In 2007, The Simpsons finally received a feature film of its very own. The movie, imaginatively titled The Simpsons Movie, revolved around the concept of Springfield being encased in a great glass dome by the EPA, after its pollution levels just became too much.

Who caused the last straw by dumping his silo of pig poop in the lake? Who else but the bumbling Homer. Discovering this, the entire town descends on 742 Evergreen Terrace in a vengeful rage. Among their ranks is Grandpa himself (“I’m part of the mob!”), who is later seen pointing a shotgun at the family as they stage their miraculous escape from the dome.

4 When He Discarded Mona’s Precious Pie Recipes And Lied About It

For a man who spends much of his waking life scarfing donuts and/or daydream about the land of chocolate, it’s no surprise that Homer holds all matters food-related super close to his heart. As a result, Abe’s confession in “Forgive And Regret” is one of the toughest to stomach yet.

Following another heart attack, Abe admits in this Season 29 episode that he threw away Mona’s collection of pie recipes (threw them off a cliff, no less). Homer is distraught to learn this, as his mother’s baking represents some of his happiest childhood memories. Their relationship is the most strained it’s been for some time, though they do make peace again after discovering that a nearby restauranteur had kept the recipes safe.

3 He Was Happy For The Family’s Home To Be Destroyed During The Construction Of The Matlock Expressway

Springfield’s residents are certainly committed to particular TV shows. Marge’s sisters Patty and Selma both live lives that revolve around their beloved MacGyver (a fact Sideshow Bob once exploited to set another diabolical plot in motion), while every pensioner in the town favors Matlock.

In a bid to gain their support, both Mayor Quimby and Sideshow Bob worked to bring the “Matlock Expressway” through Evergreen Terrace. The project had Abe and his fellow pensioners’ complete support, regardless of the fact that the construction would require the demolition of Homer and the family’s house.

2 He Was The Worst Babysitter Ever

Well, maybe not the very worst. After all, very early in the show’s run, the Babysitter Bandit tried to tie up the children and steal everything of value in the house. Abe didn’t directly intend to do anything wrong, but he was clearly among the least responsible babysitters the family ever had.

In “Home Sweet Homediddly-Dum-Doodily” (Season 7), the children are left with Grampa for just a few hours while Marge and Homer go to a spa. On their return, in typical Simpsons style, social workers found Abe asleep and malnourished, the house in a terrible state and Bart, Lisa and Maggie in a worse one. Homer and Marge are forced to undertake a parenting class and Abe refuses to acknowledge his shortcomings.

1 Constantly Neglecting Him

There’s one line from the movie that perfectly encapsulates Homer and Abe’s relationship. Homer tells Bart, “I wasn’t much of a father. It must have started with the way my father raised me. Yes, it’s clear to me, it’s just been one long, unbroken cycle of…”

Abe himself states that Mona’s job was to care for the boy; he himself was “mainly in it for the spanking.” As Homer concludes, if he’d have a more caring father figure in his own life, he may have been better equipped to care for his own children. Abe’s greatest failing.
