The Simpsons Maggie Is The Only Kid To Ever Call Homer Daddy

The Simpsons may be television’s most famous family but, bizarrely, Maggie is the only one of the kids to call Homer “daddy” on the show. Debuting way back in 1989, The Simpsons was a hit with critics from its first episode, the Christmas special “Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire.” However, while early seasons were well-liked thanks to their cynical edge, it was not until its third season that the series hit its stride and became the beloved pop culture institution that The Simpsons was throughout the ‘90s and ‘00s.

The early seasons of The Simpsons remain fan favorites, as the show’s satire of family sitcom conventions melded with a faster pace and more ambitiously surreal humor. From season 3-12 (often called the show’s Golden Age), The Simpsons boasted a faster pace and more uniquely strange, silly, style of humor than its many competitors. This balance of family sitcom sweetness with constant comic invention soon guaranteed the series a place in television history.

However, even though the theme of family is central to The Simpsons and even gives the show its title, only one of the Simpsons kids has called their father “daddy” in the show’s history. In season 4, episode 10, “Lisa’s First Word,” it is revealed that Maggie is the only one to call Homer “daddy,” even if no one is around to hear her do so. The moment in question officers when the rest of Springfield’s first family are attempting to goad Maggie into saying her first word, setting up a flashback to when they were trying to get Lisa to say her first word (said word ended up, of course, being “Bart”). Soon after, the eponymous brood give up their attempts. However, at the end of the episode, after Homer tucks Maggie in for the night and closes the door, she takes out her pacifier and says, “Daddy,” even though no one is around to hear.

It is a touching moment from a series that famously attempted to avoid schmaltzy scenes, as earlier in the episode Bart and Lisa find it funny that they both refer to their dad as “Homer,” even though he wishes they’d call him dad. It is rare for lovable dimwit Homer Simpson to be at the center of an emotional scene, and his struggle to be recognized as a father figure by his kids is a moving one whose payoff is surprisingly sweet. Of course, Maggie’s first words are not the only notable case of Homer gaining some meaningful recognition from his usually disrespectful kids.

Although the family may be embarrassed by his antics often throughout their many adventures, Homer does also earn his son’s respect in the climax of the show’s long-awaited movie adaptation. It may take risking his life to save Springfield from the dome encasing the town and its inhabitants, but The Simpsons Movie does see Homer manage to earn Bart’s respect as his dad. Between this, Maggie’s first word, and Lisa’s saxophone, Homer Simpson may be one of television’s best parents, despite his best efforts to prove the opposite throughout many of The Simpsons’ hundreds of episodes.
