The Simpsons Season 4 Reused RuleBreaking Homer Face From Original Shorts

The Simpsons has some very specific rules on character design that must be followed, but that didn’t stop animators from reusing a Homer Simpson face that breaks a couple of those rules. Created by Matt Groening, The Simpsons began as a series of animated shorts for The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987, and officially debuted as a half-hour prime time show in 1989. Since then, it has become the longest-running American scripted primetime television series and has expanded to other media as well.

The Simpsons follows the daily lives of the title family along with those of other colorful characters from the town of Springfield. Each character has a unique design, but they all share some characteristics that ultimately make them part of the Simpsons universe, and the main characters went through a redesign once they made the change to a half-hour animated show. It’s not surprising, then, that there are rules that animators have to follow when it comes to character design.

The quality of The Simpsons – both in narrative and appearance – has changed over the years, with the image quality becoming cleaner, but the designs are still the same, which creates cohesion between all seasons. However, there have been some subtle cases where designs from the shorts have been reused, but now adhering to the rules.

The Simpsons Episode That Reused A Rule-Breaking Homer Face

Some of The Simpsons’ rules on character design were recently shared by writer and producer Josh Weinstein, showing the amount of detail and attention that go into bringing the citizens of Springfield to life. The rules might seem simple but they definitely aren’t, and they are all about the details of the face: the shape of the mouth, the level of the ears, how teeth should be drawn, etc. There are some big “no-no’s” when animating the characters, but the animators reused a rule-breaking Homer face in season 4, though this time with changes that fall into the rules.

In the episode “Brother from the Same Planet”, when Homer is teasing a dolphin, he laughs and his face is distorted, with his eyes pointing in different directions. This is the same face Homer does when teasing a monkey in the short “Zoo Story”, released in 1988. In the short, Homer’s teeth are sharp, the nose is longer and lower, and the ear is also lower. The rules state that the teeth must be rounded, the nose should overlap the eye, and the ear must be close to eyes and nose. Though those “mistakes” made in the shorts won’t be repeated in the series, the animators can probably reuse designs but with the new character rules, and this Homer surely isn’t the only example in over 30 seasons of The Simpsons.
