It is the time of year for pumpkins, costumes, skeletons, and plenty of candy. While everyone can enjoy the treats the aesthetics of October, there is nothing like being a kid and going out to Trick or Treat with family and friends.

Another huge part of being a kid is cartoons, and cartoons do well in producing Halloween specials just for this time of hauntings and sweets. It wasn’t just cartoons that did this but adult sitcoms as well. However, it is the cartoons that really capture the lightheartedness, magic, and mystery of these times.

10 It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Based on Charles Schulz’s Peanuts comics, Charlie Brown specials are seen as some of the most wholesome content available on television. Not only that, but people of all ages are attached to it ever since it began airing animated adaptations of the comics back in the ’60s.

Snoopy and the gang’s Halloween special is considered a classic by many, and it is not unusual for some to watch the the 1966 special once every year. Peanuts inspired many well loved shorts and shows, but It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown stands above them all. It is whimsical in its little ghost costumes, apple bobbing, and giant pumpkins.

9 Arnold’s Halloween (Hey Arnold!)

Nickelodeon’s Hey Arnold! took a creative turn for one of its Halloween specials and gave it a sci-fi spin rather than choosing the usual ghostly route. Here, a couple of the characters decide to fake an alien invasion as a Halloween prank. They do so through a fake news radio broadcast.

If that sounds familiar, that’s because this episode is based on the time Orson Welles accidentally got people to believe an alien invasion was occurring through a radio drama adaptation of War of the Worlds. Fans love this Hey Arnold! episode for its many references to what typically gets people hooked to stories about aliens. X-Files fans would love it.

8 Scaredy Pants (SpongeBob Squarepants)

Halloween even can happen under the sea. Aired in 1999 back in season one, Halloween comes to Bikini Bottom in Scaredy Pants. After hearing a story of the Flying Dutchman, SpongeBob becomes afraid of nearly everything, which makes for a lot of funny gags throughout the episode.

SpongeBob wishes he can scare others instead of them scaring him all the time, so he decides to dress up as the Flying Dutchman to scare people for revenge. Of course, this leads to the real Flying Dutchman appearing.

7 Doug’s Halloween Adventure (Doug)

Aired in 1993, this episode features Doug going to a spooky closed amusement park with Skeeter and Roger. Once there, Roger gives him a big scare. So, obviously, Doug makes attempts to scare Roger back as revenge.

Yes, Doug’s Halloween special is a little similar to the plotline of SpongeBob Squarepants’ Halloween episode. It definitely stands out, though, in terms of the spooky amusement park and creepy scenes. One of the rides as them sitting in a coffin, so that’s cool.

6 Boo Haw Haw (Ed Edd N’ Eddy)

In this Halloween special, the three Eds decide to find a fabled town called Spook-E-Ville through a map left behind by Eddy’s brother. In typical Ed, Edd, n’ Eddy fashion, the episode gets pretty crazy.

Ed has watched so many horror movies that he begins to hallucinate that all the other kids are monsters. The personality of the Eds (and their friends) really pop with their costume choices, with Edd as a germ, Ed as a barbarian, and Eddy as a zombie Elvis.

5 The Day The World Got Really Screwed Up (The Angry Beavers)

Unlike the other specials here that look to the classics for inspiration, this particular Halloween special parodies B-movies and other sci-fi films of the ’50s. It is also the first time in The Angry Beavers that live-action footage is used, which is always an interesting creative choice for a cartoon. Also, the episode title is a reference to the 1951 sci-fi movie, The Day the Earth Stood Still.

In this episode, Daggett and Norbert go Trick-or-Treating and end up at the home of their favorite B-movie hero, Oxnard Montalvo. Starstruck turns into a fight for the fate of humanity when the beavers have to join Oxnard in his clash against a creature that is sucking things into other dimensions.

4 Sugar-Frosted Frights (Rocko’s Modern Life)

Rocko’s Modern Life is a hidden gem which spoofs tons of pop culture pieces and sometimes, it isn’t afraid to get a little mature in its subject matter. In this Halloween special, the gang spoofs classic literature like Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The latter may be one of the most iconic holiday stories ever written, but it’s also known for its spooky ghosts so it technically counts as a Halloween story.

Filburt also has a nightmare that is obviously a parody of ‘The Night on Bald Mountain’ from Fantasia. Even the title of the episode is a spoof, relating to the cereal Frosted Flakes which used to be refereed as Sugar Frosted Flakes.

3 Any ‘Treehouse Of Horror’ Episode (The Simpsons)

The Simpsons Treehouse Of Horror & 9 More Of The Best Halloween Episodes From Cartoons

To be fair, this isn’t exactly a single episode or special. A different Treehouse of Horror episode has aired every year since The Simpsons’ second season. So in all, there are about 30 different Halloween specials for The Simpsons and with more coming soon as the show doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon.

In terms of which are the best, follow the advice of critics and watch the early episodes from the ’90s. That was The Simpsons at its best and this is true for its Halloween specials as well. Though the newer specials do have their moments and preference is subjective, nothing can beat ’90s-era Simpsons.

2 Billy & Mandy’s Jacked-Up Halloween (The Grim Adventures Of Billy & Mandy)

The Simpsons Treehouse Of Horror & 9 More Of The Best Halloween Episodes From Cartoons

To some, this entirety of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy may feel like its own Halloween special due to its dark characters and morbid sense of humor. However, it does have its own dedicated Halloween episode as well.

Jacked-Up Halloween introduces the pumpkin-headed Jack O’Lantern, who acts as the antagonist for the special. His backstory is pretty cool, as it is based on a real folklore character from All Hallow’s Eve: Stingy Jack. Since he was executed through beheading, he replaced his head with a jack-o-lantern after tricking Grim into making him immortal.

1 Draculee, Draculaa/Phranken-Runt (Animaniacs)

The original Animaniacs show is the ruler of spoofing, and they stuck to it with their Halloween special which consisted of making fun of two classic horror monsters: Dracula and Frankenstein. In one half, the Warner siblings stay at Dracula’s castle in Transylvania. In the other, the stray dog and cat, Rita and Runt, meet Phrankenstein.

As usual, the jokes are quite witty and some are definitely targeted more towards older audiences than kids.
