For many Transformers fans, the original 1984 cartoon timeline is the standard upon which all other spinoff properties and re-imaginings are weighed. Though dated by today’s standards (and loaded with continuity errors), The Transformers was the vehicle that propelled the property into mainstream sci-fi pop culture.

The benevolent Autobots took center stage as extraterrestrial visitors to Earth who vowed to protect it from their rivals, the Decepticons. However, there were moments in the show’s timeline when the Decepticons proved their valor, even if it was fleeting. Here’s 5 examples of Autobot heroism, and Decepticon change of heart.

10 The Autobots Valued All Life

Optimus Prime and the Autobots easily recognized the value of all life, even that which was alien to their own kind. After crash landing on Earth and awakening millions of years later, the Autobots quickly allied themselves with humanity in a mutual partnership of respect and cooperation against the Decepticon threat.

Several major catastrophes broke out during the course of the original animated series, but the Autobots always stepped up to save the universe, and preserve the sanctity of life, wherever it may be found.

9 The Decepticons Fought For Unity

Megatron’s original goal for the Decepticons was to establish unity among all Cybertronians great and small. However, his ideological battle against an unjust system soon paved the road to corruption, distorting his original goals.

While Decepticon disdain for the Autobots was constant, their true end goal would be the same – to eventually unify Cybertron under one banner. What a shame Megatron took the Stalin-esque route to try and get there.

8 The Autobots Fought For Earth

After crashing on Earth and awakening eons later, the Autobots soon realized that Earth was in great peril, and took the necessary steps to protect it from Megatron and the Decepticons, who saw it as a rich source of resources that could aid them in their cause.

At several points, the Autobots rushed to the defense of the planet, and the life within it, while fighting a war on a second front – Cybertron. Taxing as it was, the Autobots were not about to abandon Earth to destruction, or the imperialistic rule of the Decepticons.

7 The Decepticons Were Patriots

Say what you will about Decepticon methods. At the end of the day, they loved Cybertron and believed they were standing up for the planet by initiating a cultural revolution that would turn the tide for the better.

As misguided as the Decepticons were in their quest to completely overhaul Cybertron’s political and social systems, they displayed no hatred, malice, or revulsion towards the planet itself or its culture.

6 The Autobots Believed In Sacrifice

The Autobots weren’t afraid to do what was necessary to protect the weak, and that involved self-sacrifice. Several Autobots would stare down the barrel of their own mortality to do the right thing, including Skyfire, and of course, Optimus Prime himself.

The latter would go out in a spectacular blaze of glory by single-handedly turning the tide against the Decepticons during the Battle of Autobot City in 2005. It resulted in both his death and that of his former rival, Megatron.

5 The Decepticons Fought The Establishment

Megatron kicked off the civil war that would engulf Cybertron following his own humble beginnings as a lowly worker robot caught under an unfair caste system. After battling his way into the gladiatorial ring, Megatron began amassing enough power and influence to begin pushing for political and social change on Cybertron.

At first, Megatron was a charismatic ideologue who inspired many Cybertronians, including Orion Pax, who would later be known as Optimus Prime. Unfortunately, his quest for justice and fairness soon began to corrupt him, and turn him into a radical fundamentalist with an “any means necessary” creed.

4 The Autobots Defeated The Hate Spore Plague

Even Unicron wasn’t as big a threat to the galaxy as the dread Hate Spore plague, which turned both Autobot and Decepticon alike into crazed maniacs hell-bent on mayhem and destruction. Capable of infecting one another via simple touch, the remaining Autobots were forced to flee and seek out a rare metal that could insulate them from infection.

This involved great struggle, including (but not limited to) teaming up with none other than Galvatron. When it looked like things were at their most dire, Optimus Prime was able to unleash a replenished Matrix of Leadership upon the galaxy, cleansing it of the infection.

3 The Decepticons Fought Unicron

One may chalk this up to blatant necessity, but the battle against Unicron was one the Decepticons were more than willing to fight, for the sake of their home planet. After Galvatron attempted to open the Autobot Matrix of Leadership to destroy Unicron, the planet-killer responded with an all-out attack on Cybertron.

Both Autobots and Decepticons joined forces to battle a common threat much greater than either of them. During the pitched battle, the Decepticons arguably fought more passionately than the Autobots, in order to preserve the planet they had since conquered. They would do it again when Starscream attempted to reactivate Unicron’s severed head, so it could join with Cybertron and complete his resurrection.

2 The Autobots Spared Their Enemies

The sanctity and preservation of life was an Autobot mantra, and it didn’t stop at their allies. Rather, the Autobots would not hesitate to spare or save the lives of their enemies if given the chance to do so.

While these acts may have fallen on deaf ears, there’s no way to quantify the greater good that might have come from showing mercy and benevolence to one’s foe.

1 The Decepticons Called A Truce

Following the events of the 2-part Season 3 closer “The Return of Optimus Prime,” the Decepticons called a truce, which was initiated by none other than Galvatron, himself. Despite his deranged mental state and wickedness, Galvatron showed Optimus Prime the utmost respect for his actions in curing the Hate Plague.

The truce wouldn’t last long before the Decepticons resumed their ways, but it was a rare moment in which they realized the value of partnership, and working together to solve a crisis.
