Whenever a new series debuts on Netflix, it usually becomes the biggest talking point in pop culture for a little while. However, it takes a truly special show to stand out for a long time. That was the case with 2019’s The Umbrella Academy, which was viewed 45 million times in its first month alone and kept on pulling in big numbers..

Umbrella Academy is based on a comic book series of the same name created by Gerard Way. It follows a family of adopted superhero siblings as they navigate their dysfunction and deal with an impending apocalypse. With season two on the horizon, it’s time to look back at how each episode of season one ranks on IMDb.

10 Run Boy Run (Episode 2) – 7.9

As soon as this episode kicked off, fans knew they were getting something that dove deeper into the show’s lore. They watched as Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) traveled through time against his father Reginald’s wishes. The great scene was set to the song, “Run Boy Run,” where the episode title comes from.

Number Five ended up in a post-apocalyptic world that set the tone going forward. This hour also introduced everyone to Hazel (Cameron Britton) and Cha-Cha (Mary J. Blige) as they began their hunt for Five, who was looking into the fake eye he found at the site of the apocalypse.

9 We Only See Each Other At Weddings And Funerals (Episode 1) – 7.9

The premiere episode did a wonderful job of setting up every character. It started with the clips from the day the members of the Umbrella Academy were born and moved on to show them living very different lives at the time of their father’s passing.

Viewers saw Numbers One, Two, Three, Four, and Seven, only discovering who Five and Six were by the end of the installment. You clearly saw their issues at play but also fell in love as they all danced separately to “I Think We’re Alone Now” in what might be the show’s most iconic scene.

8 Extra Ordinary (Episode 3) – 8.0

Grace (Jordan Robbins), the android mother of the Umbrella Academy, had something to do with the death of their father. The siblings could tell she was off and argued over whether or not they should permanently deactivate her, which divided them further.

Hazel and Cha-Cha made it to the mansion and had a pretty epic fight with most of the siblings. Luther (Tom Hopper) revealed the effects of an experiment his father did on him, while Klaus (Robert Sheehan) was kidnapped. Diego (David Castañeda) noticed his mother’s malfunctions and opted to turn her off, even though it crushed him.

7 Man On The Moon (Episode 4) – 8.1

Judging by these ratings, it certainly seems like the show only got better as it progressed. “Man on the Moon” detailed what happened to cause Luther’s unfortunate transformation. It also showed the bond growing between Vanya (Ellen Page) and Leonard (John Magaro).

The main focus of this episode was Klaus getting tortured by Hazel and Cha-Cha. Sobering up, he began seeing the dead victims of the two and used it against them. Detective Patch (Ashley Madekwe) rescued Klaus but was gunned down by Cha-Cha, bringing heartbreak upon Diego.

6 The Day That Was (Episode 7) – 8.3

“The Day That Was” opened by telling the backstory of Leonard and explaining his motivations. His real name is Harold Jenkins and he was born at the same time as the Umbrella Academy, who he idolized. However, since he wasn’t special and was born through a normal pregnancy, Reginald rejected bringing him in.

It was also revealed that he was the one who needed to be stopped to prevent the apocalypse. Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) recognized him from his time with Vanya, setting them on a collision course. He helped Vanya let out her powers, which cost him his eye and killed two others.

5 Number Five (Episode 5) – 8.3

One of the show’s biggest mysteries early on surrounded Number Five. This aptly named installment detailed what his life was like in the apocalypse over the years before he was brought in to work with The Handler (Kate Walsh) in The Commission.

In the present, Number Five brought in his brothers (mainly Luther) in his efforts to stop the apocalypse. Meanwhile, Klaus returned from his own time-traveling trip and dealt with a loss he suffered in that era. He and Diego went after Hazel and Cha-Cha, leading to a big showdown that crossed paths with Number Five and Luther.

4 The Day That Wasn’t (Episode 6) – 8.5

This episode felt like a major turning point for the series. It was here that a ton was explained and revealed, including the first realization that Vanya had powers of her own and that her father suppressed them. Luther also found out that his moon research was pointless busy work and he rekindled his bond with Allison.

Elsewhere, Klaus got help from Diego to get sober before the world ends. However, none of it actually ended up happening as the timeline was altered by Number Five’s return, reverting to the beginning of the episode. He brought the news that they needed to stop Harold Jenkins.

3 Changes (Episode 9) – 8.6

The penultimate episode of any season is important and that’s just what “Changes” was. The shocking cliffhanger at the end of the previous installment was where this picked up and something had to be done about Vanya. Luther eventually took her out and incapacitated her.

Of course, Vanya used her powers to break free and deliver another cliffhanger. The rest of the episode saw major things happening, including the death of Harold/Leonard, and the realization that Ben could make physical contact from beyond thanks to Klaus’s powers.

2 I Heard A Rumor (Episode 8) – 8.6

It’s appropriate that this episode is titled after Allison’s power of persuasion. She is kind of the focal point as she searches for Vanya to save her from Leonard/Harold. She finally found them at a cabin where they were training Vanya in using her powers.

It went downhill fast as Allison revealed that she knew about Vanya’s abilities, as their father made her use her own power to convince Vanya that she was ordinary. A furious Vanya lashed out and slit Allison’s throat, leaving her to die. Though she survived, fans didn’t know as the episode ended.

1 The White Violin (Episode 10) – 8.9

Like so many shows, The Umbrella Academy saved its best work for its final episode of season one. An overly powerful Vanya destroyed the mansion and killed both Pogo and Grace. Ben helped Diego survive, as did the rest of the siblings. Vanya prepared for her concert while the siblings were hunted.

It all came to a head, including the differences between Hazel and Cha-Cha. As Vanya started to perform, her siblings got to her. When her powers were redirected into space, they destroyed the moon, with the falling fragments causing the apocalypse. Realizing they failed, the siblings all traveled back in time to try once again.
