The Undoing Vs YOU Which Thriller Is Better

Both You and The Undoing are exciting TV thrillers that have captivated people in the past few years. While the former’s third season is currently filming and the latter is a six-episode miniseries, both have a lot in common. Both shows feature unreliable main characters who are capable of horrific acts, and since they charm the people around them, no one is quite sure if they’re good or evil.

You has many shocking scenes and it’s safe to say that each episode of The Undoing feels fresh and surprising as well. If fans were to compare these two thrillers, which one would come out on top?

10 The Undoing: Grace’s Unraveling Is Realistic

The Undoing Vs YOU Which Thriller Is Better

Nicole Kidman puts in an incredible performance as Grace Fraser, a woman who isn’t sure if her husband, Jonathan (Hugh Grant), killed the woman he cheated on her with. Grace unravels more and more as time goes on, and this seems realistic, as anyone in this situation would have a hard time keeping their grip on reality.

This is one thing that The Undoing does better than You, as Joe’s love interests (or targets) Beck (Elizabeth Lail) and Love (Victoria Pedretti) aren’t as likable or sympathetic. They also don’t seem very relatable, as Beck keeps dating people who are bad for her and plays the damsel in distress card too often. And Love is just as evil as Joe.

9 You: Joe Is A More Layered Character Than Jonathan

The Undoing Vs YOU Which Thriller Is Better

Penn Badgley is beloved for playing Joe Goldberg and he’s definitely a more layered character than Jonathan on The Undoing.

Viewers learn that Jonathan showed no remorse or emotion after his little sister died, which proved his evil side. And while he’s narcissistic, that’s about all that viewers learn about him. Joe, on the other hand, is so captivating because his story is always unfolding. His mom abandoned him and that left a hole in his heart that makes him want to force people to love him. When he thinks someone is hurting his love interest, he gets rid of them, or when someone gets in his way, he thinks they should die. Joe has some moments of black-and-white thinking, but there seems to be so much more hiding underneath the surface, and fans look forward to learning more in season 3.

8 The Undoing: Viewers Aren’t Sure If Jonathan Is Guilty

The Undoing Vs YOU Which Thriller Is Better

There may be many things about Jonathan that seem evil or off, and yet there are so many fan theories about who killed Elena. Some fans weren’t convinced that Jonathan was the one who had committed the crime, and it’s tough for Grace to believe that her husband is really guilty. It seemed like it could have been the husband, or Grace’s lawyer friend, or maybe even Grace herself. In the final episode, Grace gives testimony in court that proves she has changed her mind and she does think Jonathan did it.

When it’s clear that Jonathan murdered Elena and there’s a wild chase involving a helicopter in the series finale, it’s definitely shocking. The fact that viewers aren’t sure if Jonathan is guilty makes it a bit more interesting than You, where it’s obvious from the first scene that Joe Goldberg is up to no good.

7 You: The Minor Characters Are More Well-Developed

While many of the minor characters on The Undoing are likable, viewers don’t get to know them as well as they might want to. Grace’s friend Sylvia appears in a few brief scenes and even Grace’s father Franklin keeps an air of mystery for the whole series.

The minor characters on You are much more well-crafted. Everyone from Joe’s LA neighbor Ellie to his NYC bookstore co-worker Ethan is fully formed and feels like a real person. This creates a much more compelling cast of characters and pulls the viewer in even more since it seems like Joe could turn on any of them at any time.

6 The Undoing: It Examines The Legal Process

Jonathan’s lawyer Haley Fitzgerald is the best of the best, and the way that she explains trials is fascinating to listen to. She shares that in her line of work, she “creates muck” and that is how she wins a lot of the time.

The Undoing is better than You because it examines the legal process, particularly when someone is accused of murder and put on trial. The show also deals with the media firestorm that starts up around this type of case, and it’s thrilling and entertaining to watch.

5 You: Each Season Finale Is Truly Shocking

While many fans were surprised that Jonathan did it on The Undoing, it’s also possible to view the six-episode miniseries as an explanation of why and how he committed this murder. It doesn’t come out of left field that he was guilty.

Each season finale of You is much more shocking, winning this TV thriller some points. It might have seemed like of course Joe would put Beck in his glass cage and then kill her, but it was still a big moment. Even more surprising was when the season 2 finale revealed that Joe was stuck living with a pregnant Love.

4 The Undoing: It’s A More Traditional Mystery

The Undoing Vs YOU Which Thriller Is Better

Sometimes it’s fun to watch a unique and fresh take on a genre, and other times, it’s nice to have some TV shows featuring a classic murder mystery theme.

The Undoing is more traditional than You in the sense that it includes all the hallmarks of a mystery. Everything is here, from the murder weapon found in a suspicious place to one of the main characters, Grace, being investigated by the cops who seem to know more than they’re letting on. The show is familiar but also high-quality.

3 You: The Series Examines What Love Means

The Undoing Vs YOU Which Thriller Is Better

You examines the meaning of love, which might be an old theme that has been done many times before, but this series offers a much fresher take than most of its contemporaries.

While The Undoing features a marriage that is totally ruined, the focus is more on the twists and turns of Jonathan’s court case. It’s exciting to watch Joe claim to love Beck and then Love, as it’s clear that love doesn’t mean stalking someone, controlling them, and even killing them.

2 The Undoing: It’s A Complicated Family Story

The Undoing Vs YOU Which Thriller Is Better

Grace and Jonathan’s son Henry finds a hiding place for the murder weapon, a hammer, as he doesn’t want his dad to get in trouble. He follows the court case with an eagle eye and obsessive vibe, and he seems terrified of his family splitting up.

At its core, The Undoing is a thriller but also a family story, and this is what makes it so special. Are Grace, Jonathan, and Henry really a family that cares about each other if Jonathan has committed this unspeakable act? How could they not see any signs or realize what was going on?

1 You: There Is More Than One Evil Character

Love Quinn is a special love interest for Joe because she’s just as bad as he is. They have both killed people and they both have scary obsessive tendencies. It’s surprising for Joe to learn Love’s backstory since he always assumes that he’s in control.

Because there is more than one evil character on You, that makes this a more compelling thriller than The Undoing, although both are highly entertaining and keep viewers on the edge of their seats the whole time.
