In The Vampire Diaries world where vampires roamed around the town of Mystic Falls, it’s no surprise that danger always lurked around the corner. While Stefan and Damon were by no means the first vampires to set foot in the town, their arrival and entanglement with human teenager Elena set off a war for survival that left most of its residents dead or turned. Before long, the two brothers went from battling each other to warring with other vampires and mythical creatures.
The rivalry between the Salvatore brothers as well as other pairings kept viewers coming back for more through the eight seasons of the show; from Damon’s centuries-old grudge against his brother to the newer, but still intense, feud between doppelgangers Katherine and Elena. These characters may have hated each other but fans loved watching their feuds, taking to Reddit to share their favorite rivalries.
Stefan Versus Damon
This fractured relationship was essentially the main story of The Vampire Diaries, particularly in its earliest seasons. Reddit user phantomxtroupe said, “their rivalry pretty much launched the franchise.”
It all began with Damon’s promise to give his brother an eternity of misery because he held him responsible for his transition to vampire. Their rivalry became even more intense when they fell in love with the same woman, high-school student Elena. However, by the end of the show, they had the best relationship of them all, having finally mended fences.
Elena Versus Katherine
Despite being doppelgangers, the two women shared an intense dislike of each other. Redditor ScorpionShadows said of the pair, “the hatred between the two is incredible.” Their rivalry was rooted in jealousy, especially as Katherine believed Stefan to be her one true love while he was dating Elena at the time.
One of the best things about their rivalry was how the two were identical in appearance and yet had such different personalities – with Katherine being far more devious and manipulated than the kind-hearted Elena. Despite her evil nature, fans loved and had some controversial opinions about TVD’s Katherine and her relationship with Elena.
Bonnie Versus Kai
In a post about the best rivalries on the show, Reddit user riabe said, “Bonnie and Kai throughout season 6 was one of their best dynamics on the show.” As two powerful witches on The Vampire Diaries, it’s no wonder Bonnie and Kai didn’t get along. Kai was a murderous traitor and Bonnie was good, kind, and loyal. They first met in the prison world when Bonnie was trapped there with Damon. The pair’s hatred for each other worsened when Bonnie trapped herself with Kai once she found out he massacred his family.
Bonnie and Kai were definitely an entertaining rivalry, outwitting and betraying each other at every turn. From beginning to end, their rivalry led to bloodshed and havoc in Mystic Falls, as well as some of the most powerful spells on the show, like the one that tied Bonnie and Elena’s lives together.
Klaus Versus Tyler
When Klaus came to Mystic Falls, he turned Tyler into a hybrid. Due to the sire bond between them, Klaus basically enslaved Tyler, making him do his evil bidding against his will. His dynamic with Tyler went from cruel master and unwilling slave to sworn enemies and almost equal rivals when Tyler finally broke the sire bond and worked with his friends to neutralize Klaus. With Klaus being such a powerful villain on The Vampire Diaries, defeating him was essentially impossible but it was entertaining to see Tyler try, even though their rivalry resulted in his mother’s death.
Stefan & Damon Versus Katherine
When the two brothers weren’t fighting each other, they were joining forces against Katherine. Since she turned them into vampires and also turned them against each other, the brothers definitely had no love for her. Damon hated her even more for toying with his emotions and turning him down for Stefan. The rivalry was a fan favorite, with Reddit user thankunext617 saying that they loved it when the brothers would try to kill Katherine “but she always survived because she was one step ahead.”
The Salvatores made several attempts to get rid of her for good, but Katherine was just too cunning and proved to be one of their most formidable villains in The Vampire Diaries. Her charisma and character made her an interesting rival too, that fans both loved and loved to hate, especially because of her complex relationship with each brother.
Rebekah Versus Elena
While the Originals were all some variation of evil, some were better than others. Klaus was undoubtedly the worst of them, but Rebekah mostly lashed out because she was lonely and misunderstood. Her hatred for Elena, for example, stemmed from Stefan choosing Elena over her, as well as Elena daggering her after she opened up about her family’s history. The two got along for a while when Elena had her humanity off. They shared funny banter whenever they bickered, sometimes over something as mundane as organizing the 20s Decade Dance in the episode “Heart of Darkness.” But, they also helped each other when the occasion called for it, such as the time Caroline helped Rebekah escape Dark Alaric in “Before Sunset,” even though Rebekah didn’t reciprocate the favor when Caroline was in danger.
Klaus Versus Stefan
As one of the worst villains on the show, it’s not surprising that Klaus was almost everyone’s rival. His relationship with Stefan was the most interesting one, especially since they were once close friends in the 1920s. Redditor riabe commented that “Stefan going full-on psycho with a death wish against Klaus in season 3 was great.”
Klaus literally brought the worst out of Stefan when he forced him to join him in order to spare Damon’s life and made him turn off his humanity. Ripper Stefan was his worst side and when he eventually broke free of Klaus’ compulsion, he was determined to get revenge for Klaus making him go dark.
Klaus Versus Mikael
One sad thing on TVD was Klaus’ relationship with his parents. His step-father abused and treated him terribly, despite everything he did to get his approval. In some ways, Mikael was responsible for the monster Klaus became and even the Redditor phantomxtroupe said “problems in the TVDU can be traced back to Mikael’s abuse of Klaus.”
For a long time, Mikael hunted him because Klaus killed Esther and framed him for it, among other things, and Klaus spent centuries running from him. He hated his father but also feared him and didn’t hesitate to put a stake through his heart when he got a chance. The origin of their rivalry was sad but gave viewers insight into how Klaus became evil and manipulative.
Damon Versus Klaus
Damon and Klaus shared similarities, especially their hot-headedness. Unsurprisingly, this made them butt heads and their rivalry was both frightening and fascinating. Reddit user twilight-allison states that “Damon & Klaus” was their favorite rivalry in the show.
While they often shared some similarities, Klaus was cunning and manipulative while Damon was impulsive, and that often led the two of them into battle, with hilarious interactions to boot. The pair had the potential to be good friends, especially after fighting a vampire hunter together, which makes their rivalry all the more intriguing to watch.
