The Vampire Diaries: 10 Book To Show Differences Nobody Talks About

The Vampire Diaries is the rare show based on a book where a bunch of things were completely changed once it came to the screen.

It’s not unusual to spot differences when a book is adapted for television, but The Vampire Diaries TV show bears almost no resemblance to the novels written by L.J. Smith. Aside from the characters’ names, it’s impossible to tell that the two have any relation to each other.

The first Vampire Diaries book was released in the early ’90s and wasn’t produced into a show until almost twenty years later. It does explain some of the differences between the two, given that the teen drama was created for an entirely different generation, but there are certain alterations that will come as a shock to those who have only seen The CW series.

10 Katherine Was Elena’s Sister

Elena may have been Katherine’s doppelgänger, but she was originally Elena’s older sister. They did bear an uncanny resemblance to each other, but unlike the show, they are not identical. Elizabeth Morrow, who was immortal, had Katherine in the 15th century and Elena in the late 20th century.

The two didn’t know about each other’s existence, but Stefan and Damon mistake Elena for Katherine when they first see her. When Katherine and Elena are finally introduced, their relationship is similar to that of the show, and Katherine is jealous of Elena’s power over the Salvatore Brothers.

9 There Were Several Dimensions

While the show does introduce the concept of Prison Worlds, The Vampire Diaries books often took place in a different dimension. When Stefan is kidnapped, Damon and Elena go through the Demon Gate and travel from Earth to the Dark Dimension to save him.

This dimension is the home to supernatural creatures that don’t exist in the show, such as kitsunes and phantoms. It’s ruled by the Guardians of the Celestial Court, who answer to the Summit Court. The Summit Court is all-powerful and has the ability to do almost anything, including reviving the dead.

8 Bonnie’s Entire Personality Is Altered

The only thing similar about Bonnie’s book and television versions is her magical abilities and even those differ drastically. In the novels, Bonnie is described as dainty and delicate and she has pale skin and red hair.

Rather than Bennett, Bonnie’s last name is McCullough, and she’s extremely fearful of the supernatural world. She’s bashful, shy, and passive, and Elena treats her like a damsel in distress who needs to be protected. Bonnie does have significant character development in the books, but she never resembles her TV adaption, who is a tough and powerful witch.

7 The Love Triangle Was Even More Intense

When Elena chooses Damon halfway through the show, the love triangle is pretty much done. Stefan still harbored feelings for his ex-girlfriend, but Elena was so hopelessly in love with Damon, it was obvious that Stefan was fighting a losing battle. In the books, the love triangle continues all the way through the last installment, and it was up in the air who Elena would be with until the final page of the novel.

Stefan isn’t angry at Elena for her feelings for his brother, and, instead, apologizes to her for keeping them apart. But Elena loves Stefan just as much as she loves Damon, and in the later novels, she claims to love him more. The final book is extremely complex, but Elena and Damon ending up together was due to chance more than anything else.

6 Caroline Was A Werewolf

Caroline’s character development was greatly attributed to her transition from human to vampire. She became braver, more confident, and gained a sense of independence that she had previously lacked. In the books, Caroline is turned into a werewolf by Tyler Smallwood, otherwise known as Tyler Lockwood.

She doesn’t have a romance with Klaus or Stefan, and she and Tyler end up having two children together. Their relationship wasn’t heavily featured in the series.

5 Bonnie And Damon Had A Romance

Damon was in love with Elena in the books and the show, but unlike the TV series, Damon started developing feelings for Bonnie. It was unexpected because Damon was much darker in the novels and Bonnie’s innocence was the opposite of everything he wanted. However, Bonnie ends up becoming Damon’s weakness, and he calls her his “little redbird,” due to her gentle nature and bright red hair.

L.J. Smith, who was hired to write the series for Alloy Entertainment, was fired, and Smith suspected it was due to the company wanting the books to more closely align with the show. Bonnie and Damon’s romance simmered down once a ghostwriter took over the novels, and there was a noticeable shift in the series. Smith later released a series of fanfiction writing towards a Stefan/Elena and Damon/Bonnie endgame, making it likely that it was the author’s plan before she was dismissed.

4 Jeremy Gilbert Didn’t Exist

Jeremy Gilbert played a big role in the onscreen version of The Vampire Diaries, but in the books, he doesn’t exist at all. Instead, Elena had a little sister named Margaret who was in elementary school. Elena’s protectiveness over her siblings is one thing that does stay the same, but it makes much more sense in the novels.

She might have had his best intentions at heart, but the way Elena mothered Jeremy was odd given the small age difference between them. Margaret, however, was a child, and Elena practically raised her after their parents’ death.

3 Bonnie And Elena Weren’t Close With Caroline

The first few episodes of The Vampire Diaries made it seem as though Caroline’s relationship with Bonnie and Elena was going to follow a similar path to the novels. Bonnie and Elena seemed to find her annoying and would even talk about Caroline behind her back.

In the books, Caroline’s jealously towards Elena made them hostile, and despite being childhood friends, she saw Elena as her enemy. This goes on for quite some time, and while Caroline’s character did a 180 in the show, she, Elena, and Bonnie were not best friends at the end of the book series.

2 Blood Sharing Was Much More Intimate

Blood sharing could be even more intimate than sex in the books, and similar to vampire mythology, the act bonded two people together. When Elena couldn’t keep down blood bags and fed from Damon in the bathroom of the Mystic Grill, it was portrayed as a sexual act and was never brought up again.

Blood sharing is seen as personal in the novels because both people open their minds to the other completely. They have access to one another’s thoughts and feelings, and it helps them understand each other on a more emotional level.

1 Meredith Is Elena’s Best Friend And A Vampire Slayer

It’s likely that Meredith Fell originated from the character, Meredith Sulez, in the book series. Meredith was Bonnie and Elena’s best friend, instead of Caroline, and she went to high school with them.

Meredith is also a vampire slayer, and her dislike for the species resembles Bonnie’s attitude throughout the first few seasons. Like Bonnie, Meredith was more accepting of Stefan due to his kind nature, but she had a deep dislike for Damon throughout the majority of the novels.
