There have been plot twists in The Vampire Diaries that were so surprising, viewers were left in a state of total shock. The series has plenty of storylines and characters to play around with, and it was surprisingly difficult to foresee what the show was planning to do next.

The supernatural drama isn’t afraid to kill off major characters and has no problem breaking up its main romances. However, not all of the surprises were bad, while some of them were just unthinkable. No matter what the circumstance was, The Vampire Diaries managed to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

10 Damon Kisses Katherine Thinking It’s Elena

By the end of The Vampire Diaries Season 1, viewers were just starting to realize that Damon was falling for Elena. Originally, all Damon cared about was getting Katherine out of the tomb and even threatened to kill Elena on more than one occasion.

When Damon kissed her after the Founder’s Day celebration, the audience was shocked that Elena was kissing him back. She had pledged her love to Stefan and didn’t seem at all interested in his brother. Things started to fall into place when Elena cut off Uncle John’s fingers and it became obvious that it was actually Katherine.

9 Klaus Kills Jenna During The Sacrifice

Jenna was one of the few characters who was completely in the dark about the supernatural. It caused complications between her and Alaric, because she could always tell that he was keeping something from her. When Jenna does find out about the vampires in town, she doesn’t live long enough to learn much about them.

Klaus kidnaps and turns her so he would have a vampire to use in the sacrifice. Jenna is such an important character that there was reason to believe Stefan and Damon would find a way to save her. The moment Klaus killed her was simultaneously heartbreaking and shocking.

8 Katherine Turns Caroline

Caroline knew nothing about the vampires lurking around Mystic Falls until she became one. When she woke up craving blood and growing fangs, she had no idea what was happening to her. After almost dying a few days before, Caroline had only healed because Damon gave her his blood.

Katherine took the opportunity to send a message to the Salvatores, somehow knowing that Caroline had vampire blood in her system. It was especially shocking because Caroline was the last person viewers expected to transition.

7 Stefan Kills Enzo

After seasons of being treated poorly by her friends and used only for her exceptional powers, Bonnie finally had someone who would do anything for her. Bonnie and Enzo’s relationship was unique because of how pure it was compared to the other couples.

With only a few episodes to go before the series finale, it seemed as though Bonnie was going to get the happy ending she deserved. But when she turned around to look at Enzo, she saw an emotionless Stefan rip out his heart. Enzo and Bonnie had spent the whole day planning their human lives together, only for everything to be taken away from her once again.

6 Elena Is Sired To Damon

Damon and Elena had been fighting their feelings for each other for seasons, but during The Vampire Diaries Season 4, there was nothing standing in their way. At least, that’s what they initially thought. After Damon and Elena finally sleep together, they discover that she’s sired to him.

It was a huge plot twist that threw everything into question, and viewers went from happy to stunned. It begged the question of whether her feelings for Damon were real, or just a result of the sire bond.

5 Caroline Turns Off Her Humanity

Almost everyone struggles with the transition into vampirism, but Caroline was a quick learner. Unlike her friends, Caroline grew into herself when she became a vampire. She was the optimist of the group, and she persevered no matter how tough things got.

Caroline was everyone’s rock, so watching her crumble after her mom’s death was especially disconcerting. The moment she snapped Elena’s neck and decided to flip the switch on her humanity was the last thing viewers expected to see.

4 Damon Kills Jeremy

Damon had been the villain for the majority of the first season, but his strong feelings for Elena were slowly making him a better man. If there was one person Damon would never hurt it was her, so no one saw the events of the Season 2 premiere coming. After Elena rejected his advances, Damon was so angry he made a snap decision.

It doesn’t take a lot for a vampire as high-strung as Damon to do something rash, and he decided to take away the person who mattered the most to her. There was a terrifying moment where it seemed as though Jeremy was gone for good, but Elena realized that Jeremy was wearing the Gilbert ring.

3 Stefan Sacrifices Himself To Save Mystic Falls

No one expected all the characters to make it out of The Vampire Diaries alive, so everyone’s lives were up in the air. However, the way Stefan went out still managed to be shocking.

Initially, it seemed as though Stefan was going to let his brother make the sacrifice, but the show delivered one last twist. When Stefan returns and injects Damon with the cure, Damon is helpless to do anything as Stefan and Katherine succumb to the hellfire.

2 Damon Kills Lexi

Damon has always been unpredictable, but he was off the rails when viewers met him in The Vampire Diaries Season 1. Damon could have murdered almost anyone and it wouldn’t have been surprising, yet what he did to Lexi came completely out of left field.

Damon and Stefan talked a big game, but even from the beginning, it was obvious that there was still love between them. Lexi wasn’t just important to Stefan, but she had looked out for Damon, as well. Damon appearing from out of nowhere and driving a stake into Lexi’s heart left viewers just as paralyzed as the shocked and heartbroken Stefan and Elena were.

1 Elena Dies In The Car Accident

Elena being a human was one of the most important aspects of the show. She was the only Petrova doppelganger still alive and thus the person that everyone was after. When her car accident paralleled her previous one with her parents, viewers assumed that Stefan would save her just as he had before.

Stefan always respected her decisions and he did everything in his power to keep her safe. Those two ideals ended up conflicting with each other in this moment though, and Stefan chose to save Matt and leave Elena behind. Her death was shocking enough, but Elena waking up in the last second of the episode was the real jaw-dropping moment.
