Twilight and The Vampire Diaries are two of the most popular vampire fictions in recent history, but why are TVD’s vampires better than Twilight’s?

There have been many renditions of vampires over the years on the big and small screen. From the original Count Dracula to every day looking vampires who one would never assume were vampires. The characteristics of vampires have gone through many phases throughout popular television shows and films.
The popularity of Twilight changed the look of vampires in a way people didn’t expect. No one expected a vampire to be so deathly pale and sparkle in the sunlight. While Twilight revamped the genre for teens in recent years, The Vampire Diaries came in as a close second. The show had fans falling in love with the show’s idea of vampires that stuck to more common lore with a twist. When it comes to vampire versus vampire, the show’s version takes the cake.
10 They Still Bleed
Part of what makes The Vampire Diaries vampires more convincing to any mundane human is the fact that they still bleed. It may seem like more of a burden, but if trying to stay under the radar amongst humans it would help that if they looked believably human. This was seen many times when Stefan or Damon were staked or injured.
The Twilight vampires don’t tend to bleed. Looking back at the film saga, it’s unlikely that a fan will see a scene with any blood that’s from a vampire themselves. This is a characteristic of the TVD vampires that is a bit more realistic in nature.
9 They’re Not Deathly Pale
One of the key differences between TVD vampires and Twilight vampires is their anatomy. The film vampires have no real blood coursing through their veins, hence why they can’t blush or maintain a rosy complexion. Not to mention they’re skin is hard and cold as stone.
In TVD, the vampires are not sickly pale and are quite tan by the looks of it. They have no issue getting bronzed skin if they want to due to a certain trick they have. Being able to perceive themselves as humans allows them more leeway to travel and go unnoticed. In Twilight, the Cullens live in Forks due to its constant overcast weather.
8 They Can Walk In The Sun
The sun has always been one of vampires’ worst enemies. This has been seen in almost every version of vampire film or TV from Van Helsing to Blade. It’s also unlikely that a vampire finds a way around the pesky sun to live in the daylight. TVD came up with a convincing loophole around this.
The Salvatore brothers are known for wearing these big family crest rings made of lapis lazuli. The blue gemstone was bewitched hundreds of years ago by a powerful witch. It allows them to walk in the sun so long as it’s always worn. The same occurred from other vampires like Elena, Caroline, or Katherine who had their own versions of the bewitched stone. The sun can be the TVD vampire’s best trick or reason why they lose a battle.
7 They Don’t Sparkle
One of the major differences between the TVD vampires and Twilight is that one of them sparkles in the sun. This characteristic for a vampire has never been before and it garnered a few chuckles at its absurdity. At the mere moment they step into the sunlight, they give away their true nature.
This isn’t the case for TVD. The only marker for their vampirism is their eyes that turn dark and display thick veins around them. It’s slightly more controllable than being sparkly in the sun.
6 Compulsion
The vampires in the film have unique abilities, like Edward reading minds or Alice seeing the future. This does put them at a slightly higher level than the vampires in TVD. But TVD vampires have one cool trick up their sleeve that those in Twilight don’t. That being compulsion.
While Edward can read people’s thoughts, he can’t force them to do anything he desires or make them forget their memories. There’s no vampire in the film saga with this ability. Damon and Stefan have many times used compulsion to have memories erased. In Klaus’s case, he’s used compulsion to force Stefan to turn off his humanity or get people to do his bidding.
5 They Can Still Enjoy Food
It’s been explained in Twilight that Edward and the rest of the vampires don’t need to eat food. They can solely survive on blood alone. For those who read the books, Edward even explains in a cafeteria scene that eating the slice of pizza isn’t satisfying and just gross.
In TVD, vampires also don’t necessarily need to eat food, but they enjoy it just like any other human. They can still taste the flavors, crave a burger, and it helps satiate the hunger for blood. Audiences often see the vampires consume alcohol or Damon enjoying a glass of bourbon. Their bodies can function just like any human and they relish in certain perks.
4 They Can Go Into Deep Sleep For Years
When comparing the lifespan between both versions of vampires, TVD has the upper hand in one regard. Twilight vampires can’t go too long without blood or their abilities weaken just like TVD. They can go on for years and years without a drop of blood but it would lead to insanity. They’re forced to stay awake forever if that’s the case. That’s one of the reasons why Edward wanted the Volturi to kill him.
In TVD, vampires are more than welcome to a snooze and enjoy a good night’s rest. Also, if they decide to not consume blood, they simply go into a deep sleep/coma-like state while their bodies mummify until someone feeds them again.
3 Their Blood Can Heal
Audiences have seen that TVD vampires can use their blood to heal humans just as long as they’re not on the brink of death.
As many version of the story goes, a human has to have had vampire blood in their system before dying. It activates the “turn.” But if a human is only injured and not necessarily on the brink of death, vampire blood can heal them without the risk of turning. Take for example Elena, who was given Damon’s blood without her knowledge to heal her head injury. She subsequently died later on, causing her to turn.
2 No Poisonous Venom
In Twilight, Edward explained one of the reasons why vampires are so deadly. Besides super strength and agility, the vampires have venom in their saliva glands. This is a toxin for humans. This is why Edward was often afraid for Bella, because the venom can cause excruciating pain and cause her to turn. It also forces vampires to completely drain their victim or run the risk of turning them.
In TVD, this type of venom doesn’t exist. A vampire can feed on multiple people without any risk of them turning or causing them psychical pain. As long as there isn’t vampire blood in their system, they won’t become a vampire. It’s a safer way to feed than the vampires in Twilight.
1 They Can Have Relations With Humans
It goes without saying that one of the awkward aspects of Twilight was in regards to Bella and Edwards’s physical relationship. Having a relationship with a human is taboo, but Edward also barely kissed Bella due to his overwhelming hunger for her blood. During their honeymoon, it’s also revealed that Edward was afraid to have sexual relations with Bella for fear of hurting her with his super strength.
When it comes to relationships in TVD, vampires and humans are no big deal. Damon has a fling with Caroline, Elena is with Stefan and Damon. Even werewolves and vampires get together. Stefan does become fearful of committing to Elena due to his hunger, but it’s not extreme. There’s not much risk involved in vampires being with humans, except when satiating their thirst and possibly going too far.
